Final Timeshift
Zoe jumped back just in time as a brght white flash filled the darkness looming above her, and she heard the frantic cry of terror as Locke crashed to the bottom of the well just inches from her. His cries turned into screams, he was in pain, and Zoe cringed at the injury of his leg, the bone was sticking out. She managed to keep down the bile rising in her throat. Gross.
"James! Can you hear me? Can anyone hear me?" Locke shouted, his eyes diverted to above him. Zoe snapped her head up immediately and gasped in horror as she realised above her was completely blocked by earth.
"Sawyer!" She cried in despair, but there was no reply. Zoe bent down on her knees, cringing as she tried to study Locke's leg to work out what she could do to help, but there was little she could do. She used her fingernails to scrape some ice up and scattered over his wound to attempt to numb the pain a little, but there were no tools around that she could use to make a sprint out of, she wasn't even going to begin trying to snap the leg back into place. Animals were her forte, not humans.
Zoe heard footsteps approaching in the distance, and it was clear Locke heard them too.
"Who’s there?" Locke called out, and then appeared a figure, silloutted in shadows, his back was to the both of them. They both watched intentively as the stranger lit a lamp and turned round to face them both, revealing his face. Zoe gasped.
"Doctor Sheppard." She whispered. It was the man who had diagnosed her pregnant months back whilst she had been in Australia.
"Hello, John. Zoe." He greeted sweetly.
"You! What are you doing down here?" Locke asked amazed while Zoe remained speechless.
"'m here to help you the rest of the way." Christian answered them both
"I... I don't understand." Locke stuttered.
"You came to see me in the cabin. You asked me how to save the island and I told you you had to move it. I said that you had to move it, John." Christian spoke sternly.
"But Ben said he knew how to do it! He told me that I had to stay here and lead his people." Locke protested.
"Since when did listening to him get you anywhere worth a damn? The good news is that you’re here now. You ready to go?" Christian snided. A low growl errupted from Zoe's lips in disapproval.
"I don't... I don't... I... I don’t know... what to do once I get there." Locke admitted. Zoe smiled to herself. She knew what she needed to do.
"There's a woman living in Los Angeles. Now once you get all your friends together--and it must be all of them, every one who left--and once you've persuaded them to join you, this woman will tell you exactly how to come back." Christian explained.
"Who is she?" Locke inquired.
"Her name is Eloise Hawking." Christian answered. Zoe frowned. She was sure that name was familiar.
"What if I can only convince some of them to come back?" Locke asked anxiously.
"I believe in you, John. You can do this." Christian replied confidently.
"Richard said I was going to die." Locke spoke somberly.
"Well, I suppose that's why they call it sacrifice." Christian replied thoughtfully.
"All right. I'm ready." Locke spoke after a pause.
"Good. Now, on the other side of this column here is a wheel, slipped off its axis. All you have to do is give it a little push." Christian instructed. Locke winced in pain as he attempted to get up, but it was clearly to painful. He gave a sideways glance to Zoe, who, was obviously a bit too pregnant to help in his oppinion, so he turned to Christian.
"Could you help me up?"
"No. Sorry. I can't." Christian replied bluntly. Locke grunted in a lot of pain as he attempted again to stand. Zoe couldn't put up with not doing anything, so she breathed in a deep breath, and tried to ignore the sight of the bone protuding out of John's skin in a sickly manner as she supported him to walk through to the otherside of the column. They entered a small, and still icy, chamber that contained the wheel Christian had mentioned. They both could see wisps of green light illuminating the space, which were accompained by an intense humming sound. Locke and Zoe exchanged curious, yet anxious glances. The large wheel was attempting to rotate forward, but kept skipping backwards, seemingly stuck in place.
"Good luck John. Zoe." Christian fare-welled them and left. Zoe didn't even bother to ask how and why he was down here. It seemed nothing could surprise her these days. She helped hobble Locke up to the wheel, putting him at the front of the wheel's arms, and she took the arm behind him, and they both threw their full body weight against it, both sturggling to push it forward, clenching their teeth hard. Unexpectingly, the wheel suddenly lurched forward with a clank. throwing both John and Zoe forward towards the wall. The light emanating from behind the wheel became increasinly tense and gradually filled the chamber so that Zoe couldn't see anything around here
"Say hello to my son." Christian requested as both Locke and Zoe were about to vanish before his eyes. The room enveloped with a blinding white light.
"Who's your son?" Locke called out to him, but it was too late, they were no longer in the ice-cave type chamber. Zoe didn't need Christian to reply though. She had already made the connection. Christian Sheppard was Jack Sheppard's dad.

Days on the Beach - plane crash
René and Adam walked through the jungle making small talk. Adam finally seemed interested in getting to know René and she was willing to oblige him. Even though he usually came across in a crass manor, she figured it was just a front to him being a somewhat emotionally broken man. She knew, at some point, someone hurt him deeply. For this, she was willing to take his criticism with a grain of salt and hear him out on their trek to get fresh water.
"Hang on a moment Adam." She stopped and put down the buckets she was carrying. Her hair had been getting pulled under neath the shoulder strap and sticking to her sweaty face. She pulled it all back and grabbed a couple of twigs from off the ground, tucked it in a bun and placed the twigs just so to hold everything in place.
Adam rolled his eyes. "I don't know why you don't just cut it off."
"Are you nuts?!" René retorted. "The last time I decided to cut my hair, strangers thought I was gay, my parents died and my cat had to be put down due to a blood cancer. I'm keeping it precisely the way it is." She gathered the buckets back up. "Let's keep moving." She told him walking past him now.
"I don't think anyone here will think you're gay René." Adam laughed, making a point to the obvious of her past three year relationship to Eric.
"Laugh all you want Adam. Make a change that severe, there are bound to be rumors." This had both of them chuckling now.
They continued their way back when somehow the course of conversation turned to Ben. René wasn't sure how or why, but Adam was definitely first to mention his name. She did her best to avoid the topic. But Adam kept pushing and digging. This one-time Ben loyalist was now adamant that Ben was no longer chosen to be one of them; "Relinquished of his duties as a true follower of Jacob and the Island" was how he referred to him. René was beginning to feel ill inside. She knew Adam had no knowledge of how the events truly played out. She felt silent long enough and was ready to berate him and put him back in his place.
"You don't know what you're talking about Adam. The demeaning hate mongering stops." She was quick and stern with him.
Adam cynically commented back, "We all know you had a crush on him, but that," Adam stopped dead in his tracks. Both he and René heard a thunderous sound that shook the trees around them. They took off running the rest of the way through the jungle. René tripped on a vine but managed to keep her footing and tripped forward back into a run. They reached an open area on the beach. There, they could see a plane shaking violently and heading towards the Hydra Station Island. Adam and René looked at each other, complete déjà vu. Adam chimed in perfectly, "Not again." With that, they continued running towards their camp.

Day 1
Carrie jumped as the plane began to shake. She looked around, as Zoe and the Oceanic 6 looked up, all of them thinking the same thing. This was it. The time had come - they were going to crash. The plane shook more violently, then with a "ding!", the "fasten seatbelts" sign came on.
"Dude," Hurley said to an unnamed man across the aisle from him, "you might wanna fasten your seat belt." He then pulled a blindfold over his eyes and sat back, waiting for the inevitable. The plane shook again, and Carrie decided it was best to put her seatbelt on, as she lost her footing briefly.
She'd fastened her seatbelt just in time - the plane shook like crazy, going this way and that. A woman screamed as a flight attendant fell into one of the seats. Carrie, Zoe and the Oceanic 6 looked around at each other, an understanding between them all. She clenched the arms of her seat, her heart racing as the turbulance got worse and worse. The plane began turning, luggage falling everywhere. Screams came from Coach, but in First Class, everyone was too scared and apprehensive to make any sound.
The turning stopped, the plane the right way round again. It began falling through the air, practically vertical, or so it felt. Carrie glanced out the half-open window, and her eyes widened in shock as she clearly saw land - she immediately recognised it as the Hydra Island. She felt relieved to see it again. The plane tossed side to side between the mountains, Lapidus no doubt expertly directing the plane the best he could. A feeling of realisation dawned over her as she saw the runway they'd built three years earlier. Perhaps Jacob had asked it to be built for this very purpose. The plane touched down on the runway, still going at an incredible speed. It kept going along the runway until it stopped with a jolt at the very end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrie clambered up, looking around. There were destroyed seats and bags all over the place. Lapidus stumbled in, carrying a torch.
"Frank!" Sun called. Carrie looked over and saw Sun was stuck between two seats. She and Lapidus both helped pull her out. "Oh my God, what happened?"
"I don't know," Lapidus replied, grunting.
Carrie looked around. She saw people in Coach helping each other, but no sign of any familiar faces. "Hang on," she frowned, "where's everyone else? Jack, Kate, Hurley ... Zoe?"
"What the hell?" Whispered Lapidus. "Where'd they go?"
"They're gone," came a familiar deadpan voice. Carrie, Sun and Lapidus whirled around, Lapidus aiming his flashlight at Ben, who was standing at the front of the aisle, unaffected by the crash. He looked at them, as if he had had no idea they'd been there.
"Gone?" Lapidus panted. "Gone where?"
"How would I know?"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrie managed to find her bag, still intact after the crash. She stood up as Lapidus walked onto the beach. "Can I get everybody's attention!" He called. "Everybody, please! Listen up, folks! Here's where we're at. The radio's dead, so I haven't been able to call in our situation. But that's all right. Soon as they figure out we're not where we're supposed to be, they'll come looking for us. So best thing to do right now is just stick together. Stick together, hunker down and just wait 'til help gets here."
"And where is here?" A French man interrupted.
"What's that?" Lapidus questioned.
"Where is here?" The man repeated, standing up and walking towards Lapidus. "What is this place?"
"I don't know where here is because this island's not on my charts," Lapidus told him simply.
"Really?"
"Really."
"Because there are some buildings over there!" The man challenged him. "And animal cages! Down the beach, you can see a bigger island across the water. So maybe you should get some new charts."
Carrie didn't hear what Lapidus said next. She spotted, in the bushes, Ben walking away. She watched him, then turned and quietly followed him as the French man argued against Lapidus. She followed Ben deep into the Jungle, but after a few minutes she lost him. Carrie looked around a clearing, confused.
"Why are you following me?"
Carrie turned around, to see Ben standing behind her, his arm still in a sling. He watched her with a blank expression until she asked him defiantly, "where are you going?"
"Back to our Island," he said, as if it were obvious. "You wanna come?"
--------------------------------------------------------------
"Wait!" Carrie called as Ben sped ahead of them both.
"I'm sorry, Carrie, but waiting doesn't interest me much right now," Ben replied. "There are three outriggers near here and I'm gonna take one. So you can come along and help me row..." he sighed and took off his sling, "or you can stay here. Frankly, it makes no difference to me."
"Why are you leaving?"
"Why are you staying?"
"The main Island..." Carrie asked, "that's where Richard is, right?"
"Honestly, I don't know," Ben replied. "But that's where I'd start looking."
There was silence for a moment, broken by rustling in the bushes. "Carrie!" Lapidus called.
"Over here," she replied, as Sun and Lapidus emerged into the clearing. They spotted her, and Lapidus jogged over, followed closely by Sun.
"Hello, Frank," Ben greeted him casually.
Lapidus looked from Ben to Carrie. "You all right?" He asked with concern.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Carrie replied, looking at Ben.
"I got worried when I couldn't find ya. I saw him leaving." Lapidus glanced at Ben. "What are you doing out here?"
"Ben knows where there's a boat. We're going back to the main Island."
Lapidus watched Ben. "You don't think you can really trust this guy, do ya?"
"I have to," Carrie shrugged. Ben turned and began making his way towards the outriggers.
A few minutes later, they emerged at a small beach. Ben tossed his satchel aside and uncovered the outriggers. "You ready?" He asked.
Carrie nodded. "Carrie," Lapidus said, making her look up from helping Ben. "I want you to think about this, okay? This guy is dangerous." Carrie turned back to the boats. She'd heard it all before, although she wasn't sure herself if she thought Ben was dangerous. "Carrie, that boat I came here on - it was filled with commandos whose only mission was to get him."
"And how'd that work out for everyone?" Ben asked casually.
"Don't do it," Lapidus said simply, ignoring Ben.
"Come with us," Carrie told them both.
"Will Jin be there?" Sun asked immediately.
"I guess so," Carrie said. "That's where I'd start looking for him if I were you."
"I'm going too," Sun said.
"Sun-" Lapidus began.
"Why don't you come with us?"
"I can't," Lapidus said, almost reluctantly. "I got a group of people I gotta look after."
"That's right, Frank," Ben agreed casually, walking towards him. "A captain's first responsibility is to his passengers. But I have people I have to take care of, too. There's a small dock about a half mile due south across the water. It leads directly to a town where I used to live. There are resources there." As Ben spoke, Carrie frowned slightly as Sun sneakily picked up an oar." So, if anyone can help you and the rest of the plane get out of here safely-"
Sun grunted as she hit Ben round the back of the head with an oar.
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed," Carrie commented.

Ajira - Day 1
René and Adam finally reached camp and they were completely out of breath. Richard was walking near his tent when he saw them. "Did you see it?!" Adam panted.
Richard nodded his head. "Yeah. We all did." He said calmly. René found it vexing. He was too calm about it. She chirped in after catching her own breath.
"What are we gonna do?" Looking him in the eye, trying to read his body language.
"We aren't going to do anything. We're staying exactly where we are." He said.
"You're kidding, right?" Adam smirked. "There could be more hostiles," Richard cut him off.
"We are not going over there. If Jacob wants them here, they'll find their own way. I'm not going to let more of our people die after the last time," he paused "and that's the end of it." René was surprised at Richards hostility but could understand. Adam was clearly annoyed. He dropped his container of water and walked away mumbling to himself.
"Are you absolutely sure?" Richard glared at René. She put her hands in the air defensively. "It's just a question."
"Yes, I am definitely sure. Business as usual as far as we're concerned. I'll send a couple of scouts to keep an eye out, I just don't know who right now." Richard looked up and down the camp. He wanted someone more likely to ask questions first, not be trigger happy like some others had been in the past.
"Vanessa's a good bet. She's a better observer than most." Richard looked at her quizzically. "I know how you think sometimes." René walked away to take the water back to their bins and sent Vanessa back to Richard.

12 December, 2007, WednesdayTunisiaLocke awoke with a start, gasping for air, his forehead sweating, and his back aching from the hard ground beneath him. Despite being in a really hot desert, it was really windy. He turned on his side, and vomitted. Not too far of directly above him he spotted a survaillence camera on the top of a pole, a single peice of scrap, rusty metal protecting it from the elemends, he felt the pain in his leg return and he groaned in protest. He faced the camera, hoping his arrival would grab someone who was watching their attention. "f anybody is there, can you help me?!" John cried out desperately. He tried to turn on his side, but the attempt was futile, and very painful, and he cried loudly in pain. Instead he glanced all around him, and he spotted Zoe, not too far away. She was still unconcious. He had no idea how long they had been where ever they were, but he could already tell that she looked darker skinned then before. The sun had done that obviously. He gasped out in a mixture of horror, shock and anxiety at her. Her stomach had swollen significantly. If he had never known her, he would have guessed her eight months or so pregnant. Had her leaving the island caused that impact? "Zoe?" Locke croaked at her, but there was no reply. He turned back at the survaillence camera, really worried now. He hoped she was ok, but there was no way he could get himself over her to check, despite her only being a few feet away. "Somebody! Please help!" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1977 - On the Island"So this is it? It's just us?" Kate asked as she, Jack, Hurley and Zoe holding baby Charlie Jr stood together. "I'm not sure. Do either of you remember crashing?" Jack asked. Zoe shook her head, and then she held Charlie closer to her chest, and kissed his forehead. The backpack on her shoulders was causing her a little bit of back pain, which didn't help that she had a messenger bag either. But she was just greatful that she managed to find her luggage as she had searched for Jack, Kate and Hurley. "Crashing? No. One second, I'm being tossed around. The next thing I know, I'm in the lagoon." Hurley explained. "Where's Sun and Sayid?" Kate breathes. "Where's Ben? Carrie?" "All right. Let's spread out, search the jungle. We come across anybody from the plane, we'll-- " Jack began to suggest, but they were suddenly interrupted by a vehical approaching. Zoe recognised the song "Dharma Lady" by Geronimo Jackson playing loudly from the vehical's stero. As the vehical approached closer, Zoe recognised immediately the VW Dharma van. So, that placed them in the 1970s somewhere. Excellent. "Dude..." Hurley trailed off. The driver of the van stopped and clambered out of the van, holding his rifle at them all, while Zoe, Kate, Jack and Hurley stood stunned and wide eyed. "Jin?" Zoe whispered. Jin lowered the gun and smiled in surprise and happieness as he realised that his friends were here, like Locke had promised and ran over to them, Hurley grabbing him instantly in a bear hug, lifting Jin off his feet. Jin started to speak frantically in Korean. "Drop him Hurley! I think he's having trouble breathing." Zoe laughed, jiggling Charlie up and down cheerfully. "I need to make a call to Sawyer." Jin smiled, taking out his radio. "Sawyer? He's here? He's ok?" Zoe spoke excitedly. "Yes! Yes, he's here. He's good." Jin replied. "Excuse me, I should probably call a little distance away incase people overhear what they shouldn't on the other end." "Ok." Zoe agreed and let Jin walk off nearer his van. Zoe glanced at Kate and caught her hopeful expression. An instead surge of jeleousy rippled through her body, and held Charlie even more protectively. Jin returned moments later. "Ok, everyone in the van." He asked of them, and they did so obligingly. Zoe dumped her bags greatfully on the floor in the back of the van, she rotates her shoulders soothingly to ease the aches away and sat Charlie on her lap as Jin took hold of the wheel and drove them through the jungle and into a valley. ------------------------------ The surf rolled in at the North Point. Zoe, Jack, Hurley, Jin, and Kate emerged from Jin's blue DHARMA van and Sawyer stood in front of his blue Jeep, staring at everyone in disbelief. Jack stepped forward and Sawyer removied his sunglasses while Zoe stood stunned as she stared into Saywer's ocean blue eyes. How she missed them. Kate looked at him now too, unaware of Zoe and Sawyer's past, both Zoe and Kate unaware of Sawyer's present. Jack looked over at Jo, who stood by Sawyer's side. Jack took a few tentative steps towards Jo, then gained confidence and swiftly reached her, Jo ran toward him too, and Zoe could spot the tears filling in her eyes, and she smiled warmly for them as they embraced and kissed. Hurley set down his guitar case and lumbered toward Sawyer. Zoe followed eagerly. Charlie giggling in her arms. "You're alive. Dude! I can't believe it!" Hurley laughed, picking Sawyer up to give another friend a giant bear hug, lifitng him up off the ground. "Easy on the ribs there, Kong." Sawyer laughed as himself and Hurley disengage, patting Hurley on the shoulder. Sawyer met Zoe's eyes and smiled warmly at her, but there was something different about the smile, it wasn't the same passionate and loving one he had given her the last time she had seen him smile, this was more of a smile of friendship. Nonetheless, she let this be, and hugged him, Charlie preventing them from a full proper embrace. "You have no idea how much I've missed you." Zoe told him as they disembraced. "I've missed you too." Sawyer replied, looking at Charlie. "Who's this little guy then?" Zoe shifted a better hold of Charlie. "This is Charlie Jr Dexter Pace." Zoe's grin widened as Charlie giggled cheerfully at Sawyer. She offered him a hold, and Sawyer took him and cradled him lovingly.

Day 1 night
It was dark, and Carrie was making her way across the beach, accompanied by Vanessa. They'd bumped into each other in the jungle, when Carrie had been following the directions Christian Shephard had given her at the Processing Center. They'd caught up, and Vanessa was now taking her back to the camp -- more specifically, back to Richard. Vanessa approached one of the tents.
"Richard?" She whispered.
"Yeah?" Carrie heard Richard's tones from within the tent, making her heart melt. It had been too long since she'd heard his voice.
"Carrie was on the plane," Vanessa told him, moving the flap of the tent slightly so she could look at him as they spoke. "She's here."
"What?!"
Vanessa stepped aside to allow Carrie to enter the tent. In the darkness, she saw Richard put down a book and take off his glasses to look at her properly in the dark. He stood up as Carrie entered the tent fully, dropping the tent flap behind her as Vanessa left. Richard looked at her adoringly, before sweeping her up in tightest embrace he'd ever given her. She hugged him back, tears starting to fall from her eyes as she came to turns with the fact he was there, and so was she, and they were together again, after three years of anguish. Richard cupped Carrie's face with one hand and gently moved her head towards him, kissing her passionately, more so than she could ever remember. She kissed him back, both finally lost in their own little world again.
After what seemed like an eternity, they broke the kiss, looking into each other's eyes. They both wanted to say so much, but none of it would come. "I missed you," Carrie whispered finally, every word filled with emotion.
"I missed you too," Richard said, holding her close. "And I'm sorry."
"It's okay," Carrie smiled, "really, it is. I love you so much, Richard Alpert."
"I love you too." Richard wanted to ask about the baby, but he knew it had to wait. Right now, all that mattered was being with Carrie again. He kissed her again, before running his hands under her shirt and lifting it off her, tossing it aside. In turn, Carrie unbuttoned Richard's shirt and let it fall to the floor, running her hands all over his torso, relieved to feel his skin against hers again. Gently, Richard lay Carrie down on his bed, carressing her body as he took off his trousers, and then hers.

1977 - Day 1
Jo and Jack finally released each other so they could catch their breath. Reluctant to let go of him completely, she clutched his arm and peered behind him to see who else had arrived in Jin's van. Kate stared back at her coldly. Jo's smile disappeared, and she nodded a polite hello to Kate. Kate didn't respond; she simply walked away.
Jo shrugged it off and continued to look around her. She spotted Sawyer embracing Zoe and Zoe's baby.
"Oh my God! Zoe!" she exclaimed. She met Jack's eyes. "I'll be right back, don't go anywhere!" she demanded of him, then bounded towards Zoe and hugged her friend joyfully.
"Zoe!! You're all right!"
"Yes!" Zoe responded happily. "We're all right, actually!" She motioned towards the baby that Sawyer held. Jo slipped her pinky finger into his tiny little hand and he gripped it tightly, then smiled and drooled all over Sawyer's arm.
"His name is Charlie," Zoe told her, smiling warmly.
"Charlie," Jo repeated, instantly smitten with him. "He's just so perfect."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following the reunion, Jo and Sawyer returned to the Barracks to plan their next steps. Sawyer and Juliet hatched a plan to sneak the newcomers into the Barracks as part of the batch of new recruits, pretending they had just arrived on the submarine. Jo felt uneasy about the plan. She didn't doubt Sawyer's ability to lie - after all, they had been lying to the Dharma folks for the past three years - but she couldn't shake the edgy feeling that lingered. She wasn't sure how long they could maintain this con, and knew the whole shady operation could blow up on them at any moment.
While Sawyer rifled through his closet for suitable clothes, Jo stopped by the clinic to speak with Chase. Thankfully, he was alone in his office, and she could tell him everything.
Chase was livid. "Why the bloody hell didn't you tell me?"
"I'm telling you right now," she replied calmly.
"No. You hid it from me when you left this morning."
Jo rolled her eyes. "I didn't want you to get all worked up about this, but here we are anyway. Look, Chase, it's fine. Everything will work out. Sawyer has a plan."
"It's LaFleur," he reminded her with a growl. "And Jack?" he asked her, point-blank.
"What about Jack?" she responded innocently. Inside, her stomach churned. She should have known this was coming.
"What happens with us, now that Jack's back?" Chase's icy gaze gave Jo chills.
"We figure it out as we go," she replied as calmly and as honestly as she could. She reached for Chase's hand and squeezed it, trying to melt his anger with sweetness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the Processing Center, Chase glared fiercely at Jack while he gave Kate her vaccination.
"OW!" she exclaimed as he jabbed her with the needle a little too roughly. "Watch what you're doing!" Kate hissed. She recognized Chase from the Hydra, and hadn't warmed up to him one bit since then.
"Sorry, sorry," Chase mumbled, wiping the blood from her wound. His cheeks reddened when he saw Jo and Jack slip outside the Processing Center together.
Jo pretended to give Jack a tour of the Barracks while peppering him with questions. "So, are you going to tell me what happened to you?"
Jack feigned confusion. "What do you mean?"
"Off-island," Jo replied impatiently. "You were gone three years, Jack! What kind of life did you have? I want to know everything!"
"Well..." Jack hesitated, unsure of how much information he should share with her. "I went back to St. Sebastien's. I joined the Neurosurgery Group."
"Well done!" Jo gasped and gave him a broad grin. Jack smiled grimly in response. This was the moment of truth - when he looked at Jo and realized what he had been missing for the past three years, he discovered that, for better or worse, he loved her so much that he simply couldn't lie to her.
"And...well...I lived with Kate. We, we were...engaged."
Jo's smile melted away and she suddenly felt very cold. The color drained from her face. She dropped the clipboard she had been holding with the list of new recruits attached. Jack bent to pick it up for her.
She was speechless. After the divorce from Sarah, he had sworn he would never marry again. Jo had believed him; she hoped she would be the one that could change his mind, but over time she had accepted that she probably wouldn't. Instead, Kate had been the one to change his mind. Now she understood the fury that Chase had felt towards her because she felt it too. She took the clipboard from Jack without a word.
"Say something," he pleaded softly, his sad eyes never leaving her face. "So much more happened after that that I..."
"You said you 'were' engaged. You're not now?" she interrupted him coolly.
"That's right," he nodded, trying to muster a smile for her.
Jo took a moment to gather her thoughts. Jack's revelation changed everything. "Look, Jack, I've been waiting for you for a very long time. And I don't mean these past three years, I mean the time before Oceanic 815 crashed. Pretty much from the moment I met you actually, and through your marriage to Sarah. I waited for you to realize that you and I should be together. And you know what? I'm really bloody sick of waiting." Jack tried to interrupt her but she held her hand up to stop him. "No, let me talk. It would be one thing if you had just lived with Kate, and shared a life with her. I get that, you moved on, I moved on, because time was passing and we had to move on. But to ask her to marry you? Jack...I'm sorry. I just...I just can't forgive that."
She left Jack standing there in stunned silence. Inwardly, Jo felt like she was dying, but she plastered a bright smile on her face and returned to the orientation festivities at the Processing Center. She had been lying for three years, and she would continue to lie now, even if she was lying to herself. Of course she still loved Jack, but she saw now with sudden clarity that she would always be in second place, no matter what Jack told her to the contrary. Just like poor Chase, who had always been her second choice. 'Maybe Chase and I deserve each other,' she thought to herself bitterly.
Juliet immediately walked over to her, sensing from Jo's expression that something was very wrong.
"Jo, what happened?" Juliet asked worriedly.
"Not now," Jo whispered. Juliet nodded in acknowledgment and continued on her way. Jo glanced around and spotted Zoe talking with Amy, who had brought her new baby Ethan to the induction ceremony.
Jo pulled her clipboard out and tried to look official as she sauntered up to Zoe. "Zoe, is it?" She found Zoe's name on the new recruits list and checked it off. "Pleasure to meet you. May I show you around the Barracks?"

1977 - Day 1Zoe was absolutely thrilled to see Jo again, and she hugged her even tighter then Sawyer, and eager to show off her son. "His name is Charlie!" She told her proudly. "Charlie," Jo responded, beaming at him. "He's just so perfect." That he was. A perfect mixture of his mother and father. He had his mother's nose, ears and flawless skin, but his father's cute button nose and personality, his hair was a blend of blonde, bronze and brown curls from both parental sides, the blonde acting as highlights, as if dyed, but completely natural. -------------------------------------------------- Sawyer had hatched a plan to smuggle the new arrivals in with dharma approval. This was the plan Zoe had been prepared for. She knew there was a chance they'd arrive back in 1970s as that was a time she had been in on the island. Sawyer informed them all that a new sub was arriving that day with new recruits. Zoe smiled knowingly and opened her satchel, revealing several forms of I.D and passports for herself and Charlie, all with different dates of birth to suit the time she was in. Sawyer and Jo looked at her impressed. She selected the passport that put her at 23 years old, with the date of birth being 27th May 1954, and Charlie's, November 15th 1976. She also had certificates of qualifications of a vet in training that suited this time period as well as certificates with later dates making her a fully qualified vet. Of course, at the apparent age of 23, she couldn't be a fully qualified vet for another two years yet., but this information nonetheless would give her a decent job with the dharma inititive. When they finally arrived at the processing center, Zoe became more intrigued. They were welcomed by a necklace of flowers, which reminded her of Hiwaii. "Namaste." One of the dharma inititive members greeted her, bowing at her. Zoe repeated the notion the best she could with a baby in her arms. She was hearded into a cue when Charlie began to cry, unsettled and unfamiliar with his environment. Zoe soothed him by hushing gently and fiddled with grabbing a bottle of milk from her satchel and feed him as she waited in the cue, Hurley first, then her. She recognised Dr Chase immediately, preparing to give her a jab, and Charlie. She winked at him when she recognised him, and he simply smiled. "What's that for?" Zoe asked as he cleaned an area of skin on her arm. "Vacination." Chase replied simply. Zoe grunted as the needle pricked her arm. She always hated injections. Charlie took it all much better, no fuss now he had his bottle. Now jabs were over, she went over to registration. "...I see you are still qualifying to become a vet?" Dr Chang asked. "Yes." Zoe replied. "And you were a year ahead?" He asked. "A year from graduation, yes. I am very good at what I do." Zoe confirmed. "Excellent. We already have a vet, but two is better then one, and looking at your files, we are very lucky to have you." Dr Chang beamed. "If you'd like to just go see Phil over there who'll provide you with everything you need." "Thank you." Zoe answered. "You're most welcome, Mrs Pace." Dr Chang beamed, and Zoe left to see Phil, who provided her with uniform and a key. She waited to one side for Kate and Jack to be processed. She wasn't waiting long when Jo sauntered causally upto her, looking offical and buisness like. "Zoe, is it?" She asked, looking at her clipboard, acting as though she never met her. "Pleasure to meet you." She ticked something off her clipboard. "May I show you around the Barracks?" "That would be just super." Zoe smiled. "

Mars walked out of her tent and wandered around the jungle near the barracks. The DHARMA members launched an attack on the Hostiles yet again the other day, and Richard asked Mars to guard the perimeter.
Mars shook her head, and headed towards the waterfall. She didn't feel like patrolling. Not now, at least. After several minutes of walking through the bushes, Mars could hear someone yelling for help.
"Somebody please help! Help!"
Mars narrowed her eyes. There's something familiar with that voice. Mars fell to her knees and crawled towards the clearing ahead of her, her body partially hidden under the tall grass. Mars gasped in shock when she saw Hurley struggling to stay afloat in the water. To add to Mars' surprise Jack, Kate and Zoe were there as well.
Mars was about to come out and help when she heard Geronimo Jackson's "Dharma Lady" playing in the background and the sound of a car. She quickly moved a few inches back and watched in silence.
Mars watched as Jin lowered his gun towards Jack, Hurley, Zoe and Kate.
"Jin?" Hurley asked in astonishment.
Mars shifted to her left and looked at the survivors. She couldn't believe that they came back to save those who are left behind. Mars couldn't help but let out a soft, almost inaudible laugh. Mars watched as Jin escorts them to his van.
Mars sighed and waited for Jin's van to move away. After several minutes, Mars stood up and dusted off her old T-shirt. Before Mars could turn around, a thought ran through Mars' mind.
'If Jack, Kate, Zoe and Hurley are here already; Carrie might be here as well.'
Mars could feel her heard pounding faster, and the searing pain of guilt surfaced yet again. She took a few deep breaths and ran back to her tent.

Ajira - Day 2 morning
René rubbed her eyes. It was another night full of odd dreams so she didn't feel rested at all. Just as she sat up Emma came crashing into her tent bounding with excitement. "Get up!" She cried gleefully at her.
"Oh my goodness! What has gotten into you?" René laughed back at her. She wasn't terribly upset about being burst onto by Emma. She was always a delightful presence to have around.
"Don't you know? Oh my goodness, how do you not know? Come ON!" she pulled hard on René's hand dragging her out of the tent and down the beach towards Richard's tent. "You are gonna absolutely die!" Emma giggled.
As the two approached Richard standing out side his tent René's heart skipped a thousand beats. Carrie walked out of his tent. He turned and gently kissed her and stroked her hair. René felt like she hit a brick wall she was so caught off guard, she couldn't believe her eyes. "Awesome huh?" Emma smiled.
René let go of Emma's hand and ran as fast as she could toward Carrie. She practically bowled her over in excitement picking her small frame up off the ground and hugging her tightly. Tears of joy streamed down her face. "You're real, you're here. MY God, you're here!"
"I can't, breathe." Carrie spurted out.
"Oh, sorry." René smiled from ear to ear taking her all in. Then she realized something, she grabbed her once again and hugged her tight. "I never said good bye to you. I'm so sorry. For the longest time we thought you were dead. SO much has happened."
Carrie smiled back, happy to see her friend as well. She took her hands, "I'm far from dead and I am most certainly real."

Carrie and René were sat on the beach, watching the tide edge ever closer. Carrie looked along the beach, in the opposite direction to the camp, where Richard stood by the water, repeatedly casting a fishing net into the ocean.
"He missed you," René told her, breaking the silence. "He missed you like crazy. He didn't say much, but I could see it in his eyes. The tiniest thing would remind him of you, a sad look would creep up in his eyes and I knew you were on his mind."
Carrie smiled, pleased to hear what René had said. "I never stopped thinking about him either. Everything reminded me of him. Songs on the radio, that sort of thing. And every..." she paused. "Every time I looked at Lynette, I saw him. It's her eyes... she has his eyes."
There was a pause as Carrie watched Richard, and René watched Carrie watching Richard. "Penny for your thoughts?" René suggested.
Carrie blinked several times in siccession and snapped out of her thoughts, looking back at René. "Nothing." She tried to shake the question off. "Doesn't matter. It's stupid."
"Oh, now I have to know!" René bumped Carrie's shoulder, trying to encourage her to speak what was on her mind. "You can tell me. I won't say anything, I promise."
Carrie relented. "Okay, fine. But only because you're the closest thing I got to a best friend here." She paused, looking at Richard again. Every inch of her ached for him, and she knew he felt the same. "I wanna marry him."
"You should," René agreed immediately. Carrie looked at her. "I don't see why not. I mean, you two are meant for each other. If I've learnt anything about Richard over the last three years, it's that he absolutely adores you."
"It's not that simple, though. You know he's old, René, really old. He's not like any of us, he's been around for Christ knows how long. Why would he want to marry me, knowing one day he'll watch me die - hopefully of old age - while he looks exactly the same as he did when we first met?"
"Because he loves you," René replied simply. "Call me old-fashioned, but that's what marriage is supposed to be about at the end of the day. People have forgotten that."
"What if he doesn't want to?"
"There's nothing wrong with asking, Carrie." There was a pause. René seemed to be itching to say something, but didn't know how. But Carrie knew exactly what she wanted to say, so she decided to say it for her.
"Surprised you haven't asked after him yet," she said casually.
"Who?" René enquired, pretending not to know who she was talking about, but both women knew who Carrie was referring to. She looked at René with her eyebrows raised, telling her not to play naïve. René sighed, giving in. "Okay, I'll say it... did you see him? Ben?"
"Yeah," Carrie replied quickly, looking back out at the vast sea. "You could say that."
René looked at her, bemused. "What do you mean?"
"Couple of weeks ago," Carrie began to explain, "I was taking a shortcut through an alley, but Ben grabbed me. He tried to kill me, but the gun jammed, so he took me outside, I guess he was gonna take me somewhere there was something or someone standing by to kill me if some thing went wrong. We were in an empty street, no cars, just me, Ben, the street and a wall. Then Ben spotted some back vans in the distance, he said they we're Widmore's men. They were heading in our direction, there was nowhere for him to hide, so I-" Carrie paused, looking at René. "I pushed him against the wall and I kissed him."
René looked at her in utter shock. No doubt she was feeling extremely jealous of her. After all, from an outside point of view, it was quite unfair. Carrie and Ben hated each other, and had locked lips. Yet René was deeply in lovew ith Ben, or so she thought, and seemed to have no chance of ever getting even remotely close to that situation.
"You kissed Ben?" A familiar voice spoke from behind them, making them both jump. Carrie smiled as Richard sat down on her other side.
"How long were you listening?" She asked him.
"Long enough to know you did it to save his life," he replied casually, but Carrie could sense a hint of pride in his voice.
"I can't believe that," René said at last. "You kissed Ben?!"
"If it helps, he's an awful kisser," Carrie laughed.
"He probably isn't that bad," said Richard, "you're just comparing him to me."
René looked at Carrie, having just realised something. "Wait, since when do you call him Ben?"
"Since then," she admitted. "To be fair, he called me Carrie first," she added quickly. "Haven't seen him since."
René looked rather disappointed for a moment. "I'll leave you two be," she said, going to stand up.
"No, stay!" Carrie insisted.
René shook her head. "I gotta check on Zack and Emma anyway." She stood up and went over to them. Carrie sighed and cuddled herself up to Richard. She knew what René was trying to do, and it wasn't going to work.
"Come on, then," Richard said, putting his arm around Carrie's shouler. "Tell me about the baby."

René sulked as she walked the rocks of the beach. Trying to comprehend her own feelings, to keep them in check. She couldn't fathom for the life of her why what Carrie had told her about Ben bothered her so much. Feelings of more guilt than anything. She was more bruised by the fact that Carrie kissed Ben to save his life than Ben trying to kill Carrie. It made sense logically, what Carrie had done. But the reasoning for Ben wanting her dead she couldn't wrap her head around. Her head started to hurt from the stress. If only he were here, to get the truth from, she thought to herself. Certainly, there must have been a reason. She took a seat on the rocks. Looking across the way she saw Cindy sitting down the beach with Zack and Emma. They appeared to be studying from their books.
"May I join you?" René heard the familiar cocky voice. Without looking up she answered.
"Sure. Take a load off." She heard her tone, sarcasm. Unintentional, but she couldn't help it right now.
"I figured you'd be celebrating right now with Carrie back?" Adam said.
"I'm actually ecstatic she's here. I'm just letting some things sink in right now. She had, things to tell me."
"Like what?" Adam prodded.
"Personal stuff Adam, sorry. Not ready to share." She smiled a little bit at him. She didn't want him to feel as if it weren't completely his business. He had a right to ask. She just wasn't ready to trust him with anything personal.
"Alright then." he said.
"Why are you down here? Not that you don't have to be down here, I just," Adam laughed interrupting her.
"You looked like you needed another human being right now. Not that I'm your first choice mind you. I know we aren't close by any means. But you needed, someone." This time Adam smiled back at her. This was the first time she had ever noticed him acting like a human being that cared. She bumped his shoulder with hers.
"Thanks." she said.
As they made small talk about life before the Island Emma came running up to them. She was full of excitement for finally correctly ingesting and using her Latin phrases she'd been learning. Adam shook his head at her. "Very impressive, keep it up." Emma blushed and ran back to Cindy and her brother.
René started giggling. "What?" Adam looked at her.
"I think she has a crush on you." René continued laughing.
"Oh, ew, no." Adam shook his head vehemently.
"Oh come on, every girl has an older man crush at some point. Face it, you're it." Adam blushed as René began laughing so hard tears were coming out. Adam pushed her shoulder and she fell over laughing even harder. Adam couldn't help himself but to start laughing too. Her laugh had a contagious factor on him; the two bellowed over in silly hilarity.
"Ow, oh my, my stomach hurts." René blurted trying to control herself.
Adam kept giggling smiling back at her. René realizing it had been a really long time since she laughed that hard. It was nice.

"What are you doing?" Carrie asked as she sat down next to Richard. She didn't really need to ask - she could easily see what he was doing.
"Ship in a bottle," he replied, rather shortly, as he was concentrating on it.
"Finally got round to it, then." She pulled her chair closer to his, and there was silence for a while as Carrie watched Richard concentrating on his project. It was close to completion - he must have started it a while ago. "When'd you start?" She asked.
"Not long after you left. I started it to ... ease myself. Get my mind off you, off everything that happened." Carrie smiled as he spoke, and gently rested her hand on his arm.
"What did happen?" She asked. "To the survivors, are they still here?"
"No." Richard spoke quietly. He put down the tweezers he was using. "No, not anymore."
"What happened, then?"
"You really wanna know?" He looked at her darkly, and for a few moments, she could see him. The real him. All that experience, all that knowledge ... all that time. Reflected in his eyes, almost like a connection between them, the time pouring from Richard's eyes into Carrie's, until it all because too much for her, and she looked away. "Sorry," Richard apologised quickly, putting his hand on hers, which was still resting on his arm. "Sometimes I just..." he stopped, leaving the sentence hanging.
"Get carried away." Carrie finished his sentence for him. She gently ran her thumb down the side of his hand. "Tell me," she said, finally looking back up at him again.
"Would you believe me?"
"Yes," Carrie replied immediately, without hesitation. "I'll always trust you, Richard."
"They're thirty years in the past," he told her. She opened her mouth to speak, but he stopped her. "Don't ask how. Just trust me. They are." There was a pause for a moment, as Carrie tried to wrap her head around it. "You still believe me?"
"Yes." She put her other hand on top of Richard's other hand, which was still on the table, and linked her fingers between his.
Richard released his hands from the links they'd made while talking, and cupped her face with them. They looked into each other's eyes again, but this time, there was no darkness in his eyes. Only love. "I'm so glad I have you," he said, before kissing her hard on the lips.
"What was that for?" Carrie asked as Richard released the kiss.
"I told you," he replied, "I'm glad to have you, Carrie. I don't think anyone but you would trust me so much as to believe me when I mention time travel."
Carrie smiled and rested her head on his shoulder. "Didn't you say the DHARMA Initiative were around 30 years ago?" She asked absent-mindedly.
"Yeah," Richard agreed. "They all joined up... except Mars. She joined us." A pang hit Richard's stomach stomach as he realized he was going to have to tell Carrie what happeneed. And this time, she would probably never forgive him.
Carrie's attention sparked up then, and she looked up at him. "Mars? Is she okay?" Naturally, she was concerned for her sister.
Richard sighed. He didn't want to tell her, but this time, he wanted it to be he who told her, nobody else. "About two years after she came," he began to explain, "one of her friends in the camp died. She was upset and she came to me for comfort, so I-" He stopped short of what he was saying as Carrie sat up and looked at him, her eyes full of fear at what he was saying. "You've gotta understand, Carrie-"
"No," she said in a low voice, quietly at first. "No. You didn't. You didn't!" Richard opened his mouth to speak, but Carrie stood up. "Tell me you didn't, Richard!" Her voice was getting steadily louder.
"It was a year before you were even born," he tried to explain, standing up too. "Jacob hadn't even told me about you yet! How could I have known? Mars never even talked about herself, she-"
Carrie cut across him. "You know what, Richard? Forget your excuses. I wasn't angry at you, I was angry at her, because you're right, she knew perfectly well, but how could you've? But now I am angry at you, Richard. I'm angry at you because you immediately tried to explain, like you think I would be stupid enough to blame you!" Carrie was shouting now, and everyone who was nearby had stopped to listen. She'd barely been back a few days, and already they were fighting.
"Well, excuse me for misjudging you!" Richard retorted. He wasn't shouting, he never shouted, but his voice was definitely raised. "But I'm not as good at it as you are! Don't you think, after last time, you should hate me, just one tiny bit?"
"You say that like you want me to hate you! Do you want me to hate you, Richard? Is that what, ideally, you want? Because I can make it happen! It'll be bloody difficult, but I'll do it if you want, if you want me to hate you, just say the word, and I will. But remember what happened to the last person I hated? Zoe? I frogmarched her out into the bleeding jungle and tried to kill her!"
There was an audible silence as Richard and everyone listening in stood in shock. She'd never revealed, before, that part of that day's events.
"Carrie, listen to me," Richard said calmly, stepping towards her and placing his hand on her shoulder. "I know you're angry-"
"Really?" Carrie asked sarcastically, stepping back from Richard. "I'm angry? How 'bout that, I never noticed!"
"C'mon, Carrie, just calm down, please. We can talk about this. That's why I brought you here in the first place, isn't it?"
Carrie sighed and looked around. Everyone in the camp was watching them now. "You know what? Forget it." She turned around and started walking towards the jungle. "I give up!"
"Wait, where are you going?" Richard called after her.
"Away from you," she hollered back shortly.

1977 - Day 1
Jo led Zoe around the community buildings in the Barracks, carefully avoiding Jack and the other new recruits as much as possible.
Zoe noticed Jo's grim demeanor. "Is everything okay, Jo? You look...well...angry..."
"No, I'm fine," Jo replied tersely, then changed the subject. "Zoe, I've been hoping to get you alone for a while now. What happened to you? You've been gone for three years, how is it possible that Charlie is still a baby?"
Zoe shrugged her shoulders, equally puzzled by the situation they now faced. "It wasn't three years for us. When Locke and I turned the wheel we somehow caught up with time..."
"The wheel?" Jo asked in utter confusion.
Zoe sighed and shifted Charlie to her other hip. "It's a long story."
"I'm listening," Jo smiled, her curiosity rising. She listened patiently while Zoe told her everything, and had just gotten to the day she learned of Locke's shocking death when Hurley came bouncing up to them in his new Dharma cafeteria jumpsuit.
"Hey, Dudes, they're taking a picture of the new recruits. Zoe, you're wanted back at the processing center."
Jo and Zoe exchanged glances. "Go, I'll catch up with you later," she replied and watched as Zoe, Hurley and Charlie returned to the orientation festivities. Finding herself alone, she fought the tears that threatened to spill down her face. Locke was gone, she thought. She and Locke had had their battles, but she had never wished him dead. 'But at least he seems to have fulfilled his destiny,' she thought to herself. 'He had brought the Oceanic Six back to the island. She found comfort in that belief. She realized then that she hadn't told Zoe what she purposely pulled her away to tell her; Zoe still didn't realize that Sawyer and Juliet had fallen very much in love while she was away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That night, Jo visited Juliet to talk about her encounter with Jack. Her heart was absolutely shattered, and Chase was busy catching up on new recruits' medical paperwork at the processing center. Juliet was the only one she could talk to.
"I'm working on that one, why don't you and Juliet get your girl talk out of your system," Sawyer replied when Jo asked him what he intended to do about Sayid, who had been captured by the Dharma folks and was currently locked in a cell at the security headquarters.
Juliet poured glasses of Dharma merlot while Jo filled her in on Jack's years in the real world. Jo noticed Sawyer glance up briefly from his book and frown when she mentioned Jack's engagement to Kate.
They were interrupted by a knock at the door. Juliet sprang up to open it, and found Jack standing on the doorstep.
"Um, I was looking for Sawyer, I guess I came to the wrong house," Jack said nervously, spotting Jo over Juliet's shoulder.
"No, come in," Juliet replied warmly.
Jo stood up and faced Jack, her heart fluttering slightly as she remembered the neverending passionate kiss they had shared when they first reunited. That kiss held so much promise for a better future together, but now that was all destroyed. Jack had made his choice, and once again he had chosen somebody beside her. She wasn't about to forget that.
Jack avoided Jo's steely gaze and focused on Sawyer. He had also come to discuss Sayid. "So where do we go from here?" he prodded.
Sawyer hardly looked up from his book. "I'm working on it."
"Really? Because it looked to me like you were reading a book."
Sawyer laughed and placed his bookmark in his book. "I heard once Winston Churchill read a book every night, even during the Blitz. He said it made him think better. It's how I like to run things. I think. I'm sure that doesn't mean that much to you, 'cause back when you were calling the shots, you pretty much just reacted. See, you didn't think, Jack, and as I recall, a lot of people ended up dead."
"I got us off the Island," Jack replied stiffly.
"But here you are, right back where you started. So I'm gonna go back to reading my book, and I'm gonna think, 'cause that's how I saved your ass today. And that's how I'm gonna save Sayid's tomorrow. All you gotta do is go home, get a good night's rest. Let me do what I do...now ain't that a relief?
Jack turned towards the door, ready to leave. "Yeah," he admitted, meeting Jo's eyes for the briefest second before walking out the door.
"I'd better go too," Jo said to Juliet.
"Are you going to be okay?" Juliet asked, concerned.
"Yeah, I think so," Jo managed a weak smile.
Jo caught up with Jack outside of Sawyer’s house.
“You know, Jack, you should trust Sawyer. He’s turned out to be rather level-headed, and a good leader.”
“I would’ve had you pegged as the natural leader of this operation,” Jack replied. They started walking towards Jack’s yellow house.
Jo shook her head. “I didn’t want the job, but I help Sawyer out as much as I can. We’re a team, you know?”
“Yeah,” Jack conceded. “I can see that. I’m adjusting, it’s just…this whole situation is completely weird.”
Jo couldn’t help but laugh. “Do you want to hear ‘weird,’ Jack? Try this. Imagine living two doors away from yourself as a toddler, who is now living with your new baby brother Ethan, who will one day kidnap you and stick you full of needles after you’ve survived a plane crash. You also have a pre-teen brother and a drunken train wreck for a father, and you have to avoid the whole lot of them because interfering with your own timeline could have disastrous consequences, and as a result of your non-interference your older brother goes haywire at some point and becomes the cold-blooded manipulator known and loved by us all as Ben Linus. How’s that for weird?”
They stopped in front of Jack’s door. “Yeah, that’s pretty weird,” he admitted with a sheepish smile. “Do you want to come in?” he asked as he opened the door.
Jo hesitated before replying. Yes, she wanted to go in, but knew that she couldn’t. She shook her head. “No, I’m going home. Good night, Jack.”
Jack reached for her hand and rapidly pulled her towards him. She was so surprised she didn’t have a chance to protest before she felt his lips pressed against hers, and then she gave in to his kiss. They remained locked to each other for several minutes before Jo pulled away. “Now that’s just not fair,” she reprimanded him sadly, then walked away.
Richard shifted restlessly on the chair in front of Mars' tent, looking at his watch several times. His chains of thought were broken when he saw Mars coming out of her tent, wiping some blood stains off her hand with a piece of brown cloth.
"How is he?" Richard asked.
Mars couldn't help but smile and raise her right thumb. "He's perfect!" she said with bright voice. "Just finished stiching up his wounds. He should be alright soon."
Richard smiled.
Mars cracked her knuckles and streched. "Man, I'm starved." she said. "I might get something to eat."
Mars was about to walk away when Richard called her name. Mars looked over her shoulders.
"Mars, I need you to come with me." Richard said.
Mars raised an eyebrow. "Where?"
Richard took a deep breath. "Wolverhampton, U.K."
"Why?"
"Jacob told me to bring you with me." Richard quipped.
Mars shrugged. "When?"
Richard couldn't help but let out a soft laugh. "I'm going in 2 hours. I need you to meet me right here, okay? I just need to take care of a few things." Richard ran his hand through Mars' hair and walked away.
-------------------------------------------
Mars couldn't believe the feeling inside her heart. She's off the island, despite being stuck in a different time. She looked around her, amazed by the view and sounds of the 'outside world' after more than 3 years on the island.
Mars watched as Richard put folders with a lot of papers in it inside his canvas satchel.
"What are they?" Mars asked, pointing at the folders.
"Nothing." Richard said. "Just, um, research."
A few minutes later, Mars and Richard arrived at a local hospital.
"Follow me." Richard instructed.
Mars followed Richard to the hospital's nursing room for newborn babies.
"Here she is, sir." one of the nurse said. "She's very pretty."
Mars wacthed as the nurse handed the baby over to Richard. Mars couldn't help but cringe when she saw the name of the baby, written on a piece of paper that is stuck in front of the crib.
Carolyna Copeland.
"Mars? do you want to go with me outside, or do you want to stay here for a little longer?" Richard asked whilst putting the baby back to her crib.
"I.. might stay here for a little longer." Mars said, trying to remain calm. She watched as Richard walked out of the room with a nurse.
Mars watched baby Carrie shift inside her crib. Again, she felt this pain of guilt. She knew that she fell in love with someone she couldn't really have. Well, she could - but her thoughts of Carrie burdened her.
Mars looked around and put one hand around the baby's neck.
"Goodbye, Carrie." she said.
