Day 23Zoe bolted up straight to attention when she heard someone approach her room, and unlock the door. The light switch flicked and there was a quick hum and flicker of light before it filled the room. Ben stood in the doorway and took a step further into the room, allowing the door to close behind him. "Right. Now I've allowed you a little time to cool off, maybe we could have a civilized conversation." He greeted calmly. Zoe thrust her wrist that was chained to the bed, which still kept her restrained, jiggling it to make a point. "You call this civilised?" She mocked, raising an eyebrow at him, motioning at the handcuffs. "I have already explained that they were in the best interests for everyone. You proved that when Richard thought he could trust you when he removed them before." Ben continued calmly. "Can you blame me for reacting the way I did?" Zoe asked, holding her raised brow. "I believe you could have behaved better mannered, so yes, I do." Ben replied firmly. "But no matter. I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to convince you to follow up Richard's offer." Ben replied to her. "Good luck then." Zoe scoffed. "You should take this into serious consideration. Come with us, and you can live in a proper home, with proper living conditions. You can have your life back. A good decent job, with the type of work you have lived for. Working with animals, like you have your whole life." Ben continued. "I don't care. I have a home. Back in L.A." Zoe replied stubbornly. "That's funny....because I am well aware you haven't." Ben replied, smirking slightly. "I know all about what happened to Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. And I know you have no-one else back at what you call 'home'. They've all gone." "How do you know..." Zoe whispered. Ben only smiled mysteriously back at her, and something that had been niggling at her, all this time, her suspicions. They became even more heightened. "It's your fault!" She whispered in realisation, not mustering the strangth to be more out spoken. --------------------------------------------------------------- Zoe smiled at the remainder of the guests that were visiting the zoo as they left, waiting to shut up for the night.
"Thank you! See you again soon" She said to them as they walked off into the car park.
The sun was setting, and it wouldn't be long until full on nightfall, and there was still a ton of jobs to do before she left work for the night. Not that she minded. She loved spending time there so much, she knew she might as well move in.
Zoe tended to her section of the Zoo, checking on all the animals, which were mainly the animals that had been imported from Kenya and South Australia, before retreating to her vetinary surgery, checking on all the animals that had been placed under her care, and were recovering. Once she was satisfied all was done, she locked up for the night.
She walked through the park, waving and bading them goodbye to her fellow collegues on the way, smiling.
"See you tomorrow Angela." She said finally to the last collegue that was still working. It was Angela's turn to work at the gate, and so was the last person to say goodbye to.
"Night Zoe. See you tomorrow." She replied as she watched Zoe walk off towards the car park. The car park was big, and for some stupid reason, the builders of the Zoo had put the staff parking furtherst away from the enterance into the park and nearer the exit rather then the other way round. It took her twenty minutes to walk across the car park, identifying her car, she unlocked it when she was a few feet away and sank back into the driver's seat, having a little bit of a breather, closing her eyes for a moment as she allowed the freedom of her own time come to realisation through her body rather then her mind.
She opened her eyes again, and put the key into the ignition and turned it. There was a sudden loud BANG. An explosion. So loud and thunderous, it made Zoe jump, jerking so she accidently hit her car horn. She then saw in the reflection of her rear view mirror bright orange overtaking the midnight sky. She turned round and gasped in horror as she looked back in the direction of the Zoo, which was burning. Zoe shifted her gear into reverse and stamped her foot down on the accelerator, doing a quick U turn before slamming it into automatic and raced back towards the enterance of the Zoo in her car, towards the carnage that would result into the end of Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens.--------------------------------------------------------------- "You did it. You destroyed my Los Angeles Zoo!" Zoe continued, gaining more control and confidence over her voice. Ben stared at her blankly. "No." Ben replied. "I, nor any of my collegues did such thing. That's not how we work. Yes. We were willing to go to great lengths to get you here. But we aren't capable of mass genacide." "I don't believe you." Zoe replied. Ben sighed. "You really are stubborn." He commented. "Look. We didn't touch that place." "Prove it." Zoe snarled at him. "Alright." Ben replied casually. "You want proof? Fine. I can provide it. In fact, I can prove to you EXACTLY who did destory your home." Zoe stared at him, a mixture of wonder, anxiousness and curiosity spreading across her face.

Sophie sat on her porch steps as she watched the night sky. She heard a door shut as she glanced seeing Juliet step out of her house, heading towards Ben's. She noticed Juliet lookin rather formal, and pretty in the black dress she wore and heels. She watched as she walked along holding a basket of bread rolls. As she stood and knocked at Ben's door. Sophie saw Ben opening it, but then rushing off again in a flap. She sighed, the man she was in love with. Was with another woman. She felt confused. He would do one thing with her. But then would go to Juliet. Who did Ben want?. "I'm not going to be the other woman." She sighed to herself taking a sip of jucie she had with her. Then heading indoors.
Day 24
"Are you okay?"
"Hmm?" Sophie turned around seeing Ben behind her.
"I've not seen you the past few days, and when i do i feel like your avoiding me." he sat down next to her.
"I'm fine Ben."
"Some how i don't believe that....." Ben said looking across the ocean. As Sophie splashed her feet on the cool water.
"Is he still there?" she asked.
"Who?"
"The man that you sent to watch me." she sighed, starting fidderling with the wooden plank.
"I didn't send him. If i did i wouldn't be here."
"No one trusts me do they?" she sighed.
"I do." he smiled. "They just gotta get to know you. Give them time."
"And you? What do you want from me Ben? I'm just so confused my feelings for you. If you feel the same?"
"You know how i feel...."
"Ben i don't........." she sulked, looking down. Ben smiled at how cute she looked then, he rasied her head up to look at him again and leant in and kissed her on the lips. Pulling away slowly Sophie opened her eyes to feel his lips against hers again, sent a tingle all down her body.
"Do you know now?" he asked brushing a piece of hair out of her face. Sophie nodded blushing, and then ben pulled her close to him as they sat there looking out to the ocean, having there moment together.

Day 25 (Night)
Chase brought a small medical bag with him into the locker room. He pulled out a small bottle of shampoo, a bar of soap, and a key. He smiled at Jo as he unlocked her handcuffs.
"They've agreed to let you have a shower."
"oh thank God!" Jo exclaimed, delighted. The only freedom she had had thus far was a brief daily walk around the Staff closely guarded by Tom, during which she had never been allowed a glimpse of Zoe or Claire. Her quarters had become unbearable and her wrist was raw from the handcuff. Chase had brought her blankets and a pillow, but sleeping on the hard bench while handcuffed to it allowed for very little relaxation. The thought of a luxurious shower thrilled her to no end. Her delight withered, however, when Chase pulled out a large syringe filled with a golden solution out of his bag. Jo frowned.
"And what is that?" she asked warily.
Chase tried to smile to soothe her, but his eyes betrayed his anxiety. "This is a new, very powerful amnesiac drug that they've developed. It will cause you to become extremely disoriented, and you will have no memory of your time here in the Staff. You might even forget the plane crash."
"Why is that necessary, Chase?" Now Jo's anxiety was growing.
"It's for your own protection. When they find out that you've escaped, the only way they will let you go without a fight is if they know you've had this drug. Otherwise, they will hunt you down, and they will probably kill you." Jo's face paled considerably. Chase continued. "Unless you've changed your mind and you'll come with me to live more comfortably? Ben might even allow you to go home from there, Jo. Think about it."
Jo shook her head resolutely. "I'm not going anywhere without the other survivors. We're in this together."
Chase nodded. "Once you're gone from here, that's it. You won't be able to contact me. You probably won't even remember you saw me here, and I won't be able to help you or your friends. Are you really sure this is what you want?"
Jo took a moment to think about Chase's words. One image kept popping into her mind, over and over again. It was a picture of Jack, searching frantically in the jungle for any sign of her, Zoe and Claire. He was afraid. Jo knew that she had to go back to Jack.
She took a deep breath, and exhaled very slowly. "I'm sure."
Chase's disappointment was palpable, but he accepted her decision without any further debate.
"I'll start you on the drug when I come back. When it's time for you to leave here, you'll be left a safe distance from the Staff. You'll be on your own to find your way to your camp. That's the best I can do."
Suddenly an idea dawned on Jo. "Chase, why don't you come with me? You don't belong with these people. You're better than this."
Chase shook his head. "Ben has been very good to me, and the research they're doing here is very important. I really feel like I do belong with them."
Jo grabbed Chase's hands and held them tightly in hers. "Then this will probably be goodbye, again." she said softly. Chase nodded, and handed her a towel.
"Enjoy your shower," he said gruffly, trying to hide the emotion in his voice.

Without another word, Ben left the room, briefly, returning shortly after with a file. He sat down graciously beside Zoe on her bed and handed it to her. Curious, she took the folder with the hand that wasn't handcuffed to the bed, opened it and started to read.
There were newspaper articles about the explosions of L.A Zoo, newspaper clippings about Widmore Industries, which were familiar to her for some reason. A photo of a middle aged looking man. He looked cold and fierce. Just the picture alone made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. Behind the photo were documents about the man. Charles Widmore.
"What is this?" She asked, frowning. "Why are you showing me this?"
"That man. Charles Widmore. He is responsible for the loss of your life." Ben explained. "He planned it, he carried it all out."
"Why would he do that?" Zoe asked in disbelief.
"That's something I am still trying to find out." Ben admitted. "I don't know."
"What concern is it for you to know anyway?" Zoe replied with a raised eyebrow.
"He and I have history. I follow his every move very carefully. I have too." Ben replied, taking the folder back off of her. "Now, are you convinced enough that I didn't touch your pride and joy?" Zoe didn't say anything for a moment, giving Ben a hard stare.
"This doesn't change anything. I'm not joining you." Zoe insisted.
"Very well." He sighed as he stood up and walked towards the door.. "You leave me no choice."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Zoe asked indignantly.
"Well, I wanted to be able to give you the choice Doctor Taylor, but as you appear to be stubborn and close minded, you leave me no choice but to use a little more productive persuasion." Ben answered her. Zoe stared at him, her eyes widening. What did that mean? What did he mean by that? She felt her heartbeat quicker. She didn't like the sound of what he was talking about.
Ben left the room without another word, and a man in a white lab coat entered, holding a small tray with two small bottles of liquid inside and a needle, followed by Tom who watched observantly.
"Who the hell are you?" Zoe asked, starting to feel a little frightened, but refused to allow it to show on her face.
"My name is Chase." Chase replied as he started to prepare a needle.
"What are you doing?" Zoe felt her voice wobble a bit.
"This is a very strong amensia, mixed with a solution to make you relax. When you wake up, you would have lost all your memory, so Ben can create you an alternative one." Chase replied with a tone that made her shudder.
"But you can't do that!" Zoe protested. "That's a violation of..." She trailed off, in disbelif and shock of what he told her. Chase ignored her, and carried on with what he was doing casually. Tom remained stood in the doorway watching.
As Chase bent down to Zoe's level, forceable restraining her arm, despite her struggles, he had a strong grip as he located one of her veins, Zoe could have swore he winked at her, his eyes changing from being cold and ruthless to warm and soothing glow, before he jabbed it into her arm. Zoe screamed out in pain, the needle hurt, and she had never been a fan of them herself, and as she lunged forward from the pain, in the commotion of it all, she felt Chase slip something in her hand. A folded peice on paper. He smiled wickedly at her before removing the needle and retreating from the room with Tom, who turned out the lights behind him and locked the door again.
Zoe just managed to slip the peice of paper into her trouser pocket before she was forced into unconciousness as the drugs took immediate effect.

Chase returned to the locker room to find Jo freshly showered and waiting patiently for him. Tom hovered in the doorway while Chase once again handcuffed Jo to the bench. He avoided meeting her eyes, but she knew what he wanted to tell her. Tom had to witness him giving her the amnesiac drug.
Jo tossed her head towards Tom. "Would you give us a minute please, Tom?" she asked, winking mischievously. Tom caught her meaning and grinned cheekily.
"Five minutes." he replied, and closed the door.
Jo couldn't stand up while she was handcuffed to the bench, so she pulled Chase down to her level instead so that they were now kneeling on the cold cement floor. She kissed him. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her back eagerly.
"I wanted to thank you, before I forget everything you've done for me." she murmured breathlessly into his ear in between kisses.
Their lips remained locked until Tom re-entered the room and cleared his throat politely to indicate his presence. "Maybe you've forgotten, but you've got a job to do, Chase."
Chase released Jo and reached into his medical bag for the syringe. Her eyes never left his face as he inserted the needle into her arm and pushed the plunger in. Chase caught her as she slumped to the ground, unconscious.

Day 27/ Day 28
Zoe woke up with her head banging as the effects of the drugs had worn off.She srunched up her face and put her hand to her head, wincing from her thumping headache. One of her wrists were still handcuffed to the railings of the bed. She gasped lightly to herself.
"Oh my god, I remember everything!" She whispered, putting her hand to her mouth. Her room had it's lights turned off, but there was some light shining through one of the windows of the door. She eased her hand into the pocket of her trousers, remembering the note that Chase had give her before he had injected her, moving slowly. The drugs had done one thing, like he promised. It made her feel so calm and relaxed.
She picked the note out her pocket, unfolding it slowly, all the muscles in her body aching terribly still, and read the note.
Whatever you do, you must act like you have forgotten everything. From the moment the plane began to break apart in the sky, you must lie. Otherwise they will know I didn't do what I was supposed to do, and we will all be in ver great danger. I am doing my best to get you all out of here. But I need some help, and your help is required. You must pretend you have fotgotten everything to Ben. Do as he says and your situation will play out better. He will allow you to be uncuffed and escorted to a comfier room, more like a bedroom.
Then, when the time is right, a girl is going to visit you, and help you, Claire and Jo escape. Trust her. She is a good person. She will do you know harm.
I know you might be finding it hard to even trust me, but I am sure you agree with me that you don't belong here. So go. I'm giving you the choice to run away. Take it.
Zoe frowned at the note, but folded it back up an put it in her pocket just in time to hear someone approaching the door. Zoe sank back into her bed, and closed her eyes. She heard the door open and someone walk in, move a chair and sit down. It could only mean it was Ben then. Zoe remained still, convincingly asleep. She then heard someone else walk into the room.
"How long until she wakes up?" She heard ask Ben the new occupant of the room.
"Ten minutes, give or take." She heard Chase reply.
"Good. You better stick around, it might be more convincing to see a Doctor in the room." Ben informed him. Then there was silence.
Zoe counted to herself in her mind upto eight minutes, and allowed her eyes to flicker slowly open.
"Wh.....where am I?" She whispered sleepily as she acted like she was waking up for the first time.
"Hush, it's okay. You're in a hospital. Don't panic. Your perfectly fine. You were in an accident." Ben informed her in a soothing gentle voice. Zoe's eyes widened in shock.
"The...the plane!" She whispered fearfully.
"It's okay. You're safe now." Ben continue.
"But the others?" Zoe asked worridly, as she turned to look at Ben, trying to look at him if it was the first time she ever laid eyes on him. He looked at her sadly, empathy spreading across his face. Wow. He was good at acting too.
"I'm sorry my dear, they are all dead!" He told her. "There was nothing we could do, it was lucky even you survived."
"Who are you?" Zoe asked.
"My name is Benjamin Linus. I'm here to help look after you." Ben answered her with a small smile.
"Right Mr Benjamin Linus. Could You perhaps tell me why I am handcuffed to the bed?" Zoe asked with a raised eyebrow.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"This will be your room over the next few weeks. Just until you fully recover." Ben told her as he opened the door to a lovely decorated room.
"But, I want to go home." Zoe protested lighty.
"That isn't possible. At least not until a boat arrives here. And that will a few months." Ben told her.
"Why would I need to go home by a boat? Where exactly am I?" Zoe asked confused.
"Your plan crashed on an island. An island that isn't easily accessed. Only by boats. And we only have one." Ben told her. "Which is being used getting supplies right now."
"Supplies?" Zoe questioned.
"Everything will be explained tomorrow. But you need some rest. It has been an exhausting day for all my people, and they need their rest too. It's night now. Everyone is tired. I expect you are still. So lets all sleep on it, and I will tell you everything tomorrow. Deal?" Ben proposed to her. Zoe smiled weakly and nodded.
"Okay, deal." She replied. "Sorry, this whole thing it just kinda too much all at once."
"I know." Ben replied understandingly. "Which is all the more better and for the best to get some sleep. To be more prepared tomorrow."
"Thank you Mr Linus." Zoe replied polietly and retired to her room.
"Please, call me Ben." Ben smiled and closed the door, leaving Zoe to get settled. He smiled to himself. It was all just too easy.

Day 27
Jo had never felt more relaxed or carefree in her life. Every ache that had tormented her from sleeping on the hard bench and from continually crouching on the ground, confined by the handcuffs to a very small tethered space, had completely melted away.
She smiled at Chase when he tended to her and flirted shamelessly with him, since all her inhibitions had also disappeared. For two days Chase had kept a steady flow of the drug coursing through her body, and although the needle hurt like hell she was grateful for the blissful escape it brought to her mind. She was now completely smitten with the handsome Australian doctor that kept her feeling so happy. Thankfully, the Others had decided to remove the handcuffs and give her more roaming space as a result of her newly submissive state of mind.
Chase whispered to her before the first dose that he was sorry to do this, but Zoe had been given a placebo and would remain clear-minded enough to get all three of them safely back to the survivors' camp. Of course, Jo had already forgotten all of this; she no longer knew who Zoe or Claire were. Only Chase now existed in her confined world in the Staff, and the large, gruff man who took her for daily exercise in the jungle outside.
Today, she greeted Chase with a wide, goofy grin and a sloppy kiss on the cheek as Tom looked on in amusement. Chase got right to business and administered the injection into her right arm, but this time it felt different. Instead of the euphoric rush she usually felt, Jo felt a prickly, numbing feeling that made her skin crawl. This was a new feeling; Chase had obviously given her something different today. She tried to speak, to tell him that something felt very wrong, but she was unable to make a sound. Chase looked intently into her eyes, concerned but not alarmed. He clearly expected these strange effects to happen.
Chase had begun to accompany her on her short walks with Tom in order to monitor the effects of the drug. Tom and Chase now walked on either side of her towards the Staff's exit. Jo glanced around her as they walked down the Staff's main hallway and noticed a group of doctors dressed in surgical scrubs preparing for surgery in an operating room, but again Jo couldn't form the words to ask Chase what was going on. She felt unsteady on her feet, and the prickly feeling spread all over her body.
They hadn't walked very far outside of the Staff when Jo fell to the ground and began to convulse. Chase moved quickly to her side and felt her pulse, then held her down as her entire body began to shake uncontrollably.
"Get Ethan!" Chase yelled at Tom. "I have to stay with her and hold her down. Grab my medical bag while you're at it - GO NOW!" Without a word, Tom sprinted back towards the Staff. As soon as Tom was out of sight, Chase picked Jo up and carried her as fast as he could run to a hidden spot a safe distance from the Staff.
Chase whispered in Jo's ear. "I've given you a paralytic, so you won't be able to scream and give away your location. It'll wear off in less than an hour, and you'll feel completely normal again. Wait for Zoe - she'll be here soon." He crushed his lips to hers for one fleeting moment, then disappeared in the jungle. She heard Tom and Ethan confront Chase angrily, then she heard rustling in the foliage as they pushed Chase to the ground and pinned his arms behind him. She was terrified for him, but couldn't make a sound.
"You're going to have to explain yourself to Ben," Tom growled, and Jo heard a loud smack as either Tom or Ethan dealt a horrifying blow to Chase's skull. Soon the voices faded, and she was left alone in the jungle. The convulsions had passed; she now lay paralyzed and hidden from sight.
"He said to wait for Zoe," she thought to herself. "But who the hell is Zoe?"

Zoe sat on her bed, hugging her knees, waiting in the darkness. She had so many questions. Why was Chase helping her? Why didn't he really administer that forgetful drug? Why did he care to think it was important to remember?
And let alone the mysteriousness of Chase's actions alone, her mind was buzzing with questions for her concern to Claire, and why it was so important for these Others to have her.
Her thought however were interrupted as someone opened the door slyly. Zoe was rapt to attention immediately, as she noticed a young, dark curly haired girl enter her room. Slightly alarmed, but keeping her cool, Zoe spoke to her.
"Are you Alex?" She asked calmly. The girl nodded.
"He told you the plan?" She asked quietly.
"Little bit and bobs, yeah." Zoe replied cooly. "Who is he?"
"It's probably best if we keep you knowing who are are to a minimum." Alex answered her. "Come on, we don't have much time." Alex opened the door wide, and light flooded into the room. Zoe remained poised on the bed, staring at Alex curiously. "Look, do you wanna be sticking round here?"
"No." Zoe replied abruptly. "Sorry, I got lost in my own thoughts." She hopped off the bed and followed Alex cautiously down the corridor. They saw briefly in another room several people dressed in lab coats before they slipped into another room. It was beautiful. A fully equipt and pretty decorated nursery. Zoe spotted Claire immediately, soundly asleep, a small small smile played on her face as she dreamt. Time to wake up to the nightmare, Alex bent over to her, and woke her gently.
"Wake up." Alex tapped her softly. Claire stirred.
"Who are you?" Claire asked sleepily. Zoe stood back at a distance. There was something wrong. She could sense it instantly.
"Shhh; he'll hear you. Look, you have to get out of here." Alex whispered as Zoe watched the door nevously.
"Huh?" Claire responded confused.
"You have to get out of here, now." Alex explained.
"What? No, no, no, I can't leave." Claire replied. Zoe rolled her eyes. They had done what was meant to happen to her. She walked swiftly to Alex's side and helped her get the slightly dazed and helpless Claire out of bed.
"Yes you can." Alex whispered.
"I can't leave. No. What are you doing?" Claire protested as Alex and Zoe hauled her out of bed, supporting her.
"Reality check Claire! You remember me don't you? From the plane?" Zoe whispered rapidly, as she opened the door and peeked to check the opertating room. The people in white coats were still preparing the room.
"What are they going to do?" Zoe whispered fearfully to Alex.
"What are you talking about? Why are you here?" Claire asked confused, her voice getting slightly louder.
"Shhh." Alex hushed. She placed her arms firmly on Claire's shoulders and looked her directly in the eye, seriousness dead on her face. "You're going to die. They're going to cut him out of you. I can get you back to your camp, but we have to leave. Now!" Zoe's eyes widened in shock, Claire's in disbelief.
"No, no, no, hey, you're lying. You're lying, okay. I'm sure about this, okay." Claire replied, struggling free from Alex's grip.
"Claire, just look at the situation. It's really obvious!" Zoe protested. "They aren't here to help you Claire, they are going to hurt you. I firmly believe it. They were going to drug me too Claire. Make me forget everything. Make me join them. Claire. You can't trust them."
"No, you're lying. Ethan wouldn't do that." Claire replied firmly. Shivers ran instantly down Zoe's spine, and she flinched at the mention of his name. Alex shook her head at Zoe. She wasn't listening. Nothing was going to change her mind. There was only one thing for it. She got a firm grip of Claire, who struggled against her, protesting furiously.
"Get Ethan, I want to talk to Ethan. Ethan wouldn't hurt me. Ethan wouldn't... " She started to protest, as Alex placed a cloth around her mouth, drugging her, making Claire pass out.
"You'll thank me for this one day." Alex whispered to her assuringly.
"What did you do?" Zoe asked worridly as she helped grab hold of Claire with Alex for support as they made their way cautiously out the corridor, out of the Staff and into the jungle.
"I had no choice. I had to sedate her. She's convinced Ethan is on her side." Alex whispered quickly in reply, again, Zoe felt chills run down her body at the mention of Ethan's name. They made their way across the jungle, carrying Claire, bumping into Chase on the way.
"She's just over there." Chase pointed in the direction briefly, avoiding looking Zoe in the eye, looking directly at Alex. "You better hurry, it won't be long until they come back." Alex nodded and carried on, but Zoe paused and studied Chase's face.
"Why are you doing this?" She asked.
"It's important you remember." Chase replied simply. "Tell the rest of the survivors, if they want to live, they need to stay well away from here. Jo won't remember us. I'd like it to stay that way."
"I still don't know whether I can actually trust you. How do I know this isn't a trick?" Zoe asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You won't." Chase replied simply. "Now. Go. They will be back soon." Zoe nodded curtly. "And you? Who are you?"
It was then they were disturbed by someone fast approaching.
"GO!" Chase hissed, and she did without needing to be told again. She caught up with Alex and Claire quickly. There was Jo, lying motionless, but very much concious on the ground as they heard voices not far from them, shouting and a commotion.
"What happened to her?" Zoe asked fearfully as Jo remained still, despite Alex, herself and the uncncious Claire having caught up with them.
"I'd say he's given her a paralytic drug." Alex responded. "We're going to have to carry her too until Claire wakes up and Jo gets feeling back in her body.
"Great." Zoe muttered. This was getting more complicated by the minute. Remembering what Chase had told her, Zoe beant down to face Jo, and she looked scared.
"Don't worry Jo, my name is Zoe. We crashed on this island. On a plane, flying from Australia to L.A. You can trust me. We made friends since the crash. Jack. Remember Jack? He's here too. But he's a way off. I am going to take you to him. So please, you can trust me. Don't be afraid." Zoe explained to Jo quickly, and heaved her arms under Jo's shoulders, and started to drag her through the jungle.
Alex and Zoe had been dragging Claire and Jo through the jungle for a fair while when Alex suddenly stopped. They had made the journey pretty much in awkward silence.
"I'm sorry, but this is where I have to leave you from here. I need to get back before Ben suspects anything." Alex told her apologetically.
"What, no, you can't leave me on my own! I can't manage with both of them being incapacitated!" Zoe protested.
"Jo should get the feeling back in about ten minutes." Alex informed her promptly. "I'm sorry but I have to go. Good luck!" Alex then laid Claire gently to the ground and sprinted off.
"I don't know the way back to camp!" Zoe shouted after her, but Alex was gone. Zoe gave up, and slumped to the floor, cradling Jo carefully, so she didn't just drop her to the ground. She didn't know what she was going to do. She pondered quickly, and noticed a tree that she could climb easily. Maybe is she got high enough, she could see the beach and work out what direction from there.
Zoe beant down to Jo's face and whispered in her ear.
"Don't worry. I'm not going anywhere. I'll be within earshot." She whispered to her assuringly. She then stood up, and faced the tree she had chosen and started climbing. It was harder work then she had expected. She used to climb trees when she was a little girl. But that was years ago. She wondered how she had managed it so nimbly back then. She had got halfway up the tree when the weather took a signifcant chagnge for the worse. Dark clouds loomed over the jungle, and it started to spit with rain. Determined not to give up, Zoe continued to climb the tree, and she could tell from three quarters of the way up that all was ahead of her was....jungle. Nothing to help her. Except...wait....no...couldn't be. Was that smoke? The signal fire! The signal fire on the beach! She narrowed her eyes and screwed up her face as she thought hard, working out how far away they were from it. About half a day's trek? Zoe sighed defeatedly. It was going to be a long journey home. It started to rain harder, and the sky grew darker. Then it happened.
The whispers.
She had heard them before, and was still creeped out about them, not knowing what they were, who they were. Zoe's immediate thoughts were to get back to Jo and Claire, to protect them from whoever was watching, whoever was whispering, forcing back the fear that was trying to over take her. But the whisperes were hard to ignore.
The whispers became more intense, more distinct, and there was something in those words that spooked her, and through loose footing, placing her foot on the wrong branch, which snapped under her feet, causing her to fall the rest of the way down, and smack onto the jungle floor unmercifully, her head cracking on a thick hard tree root, she was knocked out instantly, she didn't even have time to scream, except a shocked gasp escpaed her lips in the moment she realised what was happening before she was consumed by darkness.

Sophie smiled to herself still thinking about the kiss she shared with Ben a few days back. She couldn't help the day dreaming. She glanced over to Ben as he poured them both some coffee. She went up behind him and wrapped her arms around him. Ben winced a little like he was in pain. As sophie pulled away.
"Whats wrong?"
"Nothing! Just not now Sophie."
"Oh....." Sophie blushed and sighed, at Ben giving her the cold shoulder. "You seem tense. Maybe i could help relax you" she giggled as she went to kiss him.
"Sophie! No. This is not what i want!" he snapped.
"Excuse me! You were the one to kiss me, and tell me how you felt." she spat back. "Grrrr Ben i am not playing stupid games with you again." she snapped. Before storming out of his house.
It was pouring with rain as she ran out to cry. The thunder thumping loudly in the distance as bolts of lightining shot the sky. She walked back to her home. Angry at Ben and herself. When she heard his voice behind her.
"Sophie!" He ran towards her. "I'm sorry i'm just....."
"What?"
"I'm just stupid" He smiled that sweet smile that always makes her heart skip a beat, he pulled her towards him and kissed her. Both standing in the rain, clothes soaking, Sophie looked up at him before taking his hand and then both running back to hers.
Thump! As they both landed in a heap on the bed, both frantically trying to get the wet clothes off. Kissing each other all over. Then Ben looked at her, as if he wanted to tell her something. But no words came out of his mouth. He grabbed her hips and rolled her so he was on top, as they kissed each other frantically, there fingers intwined. Finally they had rekindled that spark again.
..........................................................................
"I have to go." Ben whispered as he pulled his clothes on.
"Ben stay please." Sophie asked giving him puppy eyes, he laughed at it as he started to button his shirt.
"Alex will wonder where i am." he said. He leant in and kissed her again, "I'll see you tomorrow morning." Sophie slumped back in bed and just laid there grinning to herself. She was in love.

Day 27
Jo began to get the feeling back in her body just as the downpour began. She stood up on unsteady legs and looked around her, but the driving rain made it very difficult to see more than a few feet in front of her. She had no clue where she was, and had already forgotten everything that had happened in the Staff. Claire had woken up and wandered off. The other woman had also disappeared. Jo remembered the woman telling her she wouldn't go far, but now she was nowhere to be seen. She was too disoriented to even remember Zoe climbing the tree. Still dazed from the drugs, Jo wandered off into the jungle, desperate to find something familiar.
She walked for hours until hunger slowed her pace. A few fruit trees gave her a the energy to continue. Finally, she burst through the tree line and stumbled upon a beach. Jin was fishing a few feet away. He spotted her and called to Sayid.
Sayid sprinted to Jo's side. "Are you all right?" he asked, concerned. Jo nodded. "I'm just hungry, and weak."
"I'll take you to Jack," Sayid responded soothingly. "Walk with me." Sayid placed one arm around her and helped her walk back towards the beach camp.
Jack and Kate were chatting by the water supply when Kate spotted Jo and Sayid walking towards them. Her expression changed instantly to shock, and she pointed in their direction. Jack turned around and his face lit up when he realized what Kate was pointing at. He immediately ran over to Jo, relief and happiness flooding over him. He placed one hand on her shoulder and the other hand caressed her hair and cheek with unusual tenderness.
"You came back," he grinned. Jo smiled back. Something about this man felt very familiar and inviting, but she simply didn't remember his face.
"Who are you?" she asked innocently.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back at the caves, Jack examined Jo and determined that she was healthy. He noticed the needle marks in her arm but he hid his shock, not wanting to alarm Jo. They sat together by the fire afterwards, apart from the other survivors that watched them with curious fascination.
"You really don't remember me?" Jack asked, his voice tinged with regret. "We worked together at St. Sebastian's hospital in Los Angeles. My father introduced us, and we were best friends for years. Do you remember the plane crash?"
Jo shook her head. "I remember being a doctor, and I remember St. Sebastian's, but I just don't remember your face, and I definitely don't remember a plane crash." Jo looked at Jack very carefully. He was handsome, and had an earnest, rugged air about him that was very appealing.
Jack continued to coax Jo's memories back. "Do you remember Zoe and Claire? or Ethan?"
Jo shook her head again. "I don't remember anything, Jack."
Zoe woke suddenly, her first instinct was to scream, which echoed loudly throughout the jungle. Ethan! Ethan was towering over her! He was going to get her and hurt her. She just knew it. He was a dangerous and mercieless man.
She bolted upright, finding herself damp and alone in the jungle. Her heartbeat beating uncontrolably. What happened? She could recognise almost straight away she had woken up in a different area of the jungle to that from what she last remembered. Ethan towering malovlently over her, a snide smile spread across his face. It sent chills down her spine just thinking about it, and it made it worse that she kept picturing it in her mind.
Zoe took in her surroundings. Where was she? How did she get here? Her last memory had been getting bitten by something, loosing all feeling in her body, loosing control of it, and Jo panically trying to help her, but then she had disappeared too.
Her body was aching and stiff from lying awkwardly on the jungle floor, and being damp from the rain that she had forgotten didn't help things either. She shivered from the cold, feeling a cold sweat and the rain trickling from her head. She wiped it away to clear it, make herself feel clenser - if that were possible, considering the cirumstances. She paused as she did so, the texture of the liquid feeling different. Thicker then usual. She withdrew her hand from her forehead and glanced at it, red fluid covered her fingertips and palm. Bloody.
She reached her forehead and felt at it, locating the wound which was on her temple. She felt a slight shallow gouge. She had hit her head on something - either that or had been hit. She immediately glanced down at the jungle floor, looking for a possible cause of the injury, some form of relief sweeping over her when she identified the cause. A thick sticking out tree root from the jungle surface. So no-one had knocked her out. At least not with a weapon. So either she had been whacked to the ground and hit her head, or she had somehow from some sort of freak accident have done it to herself. The longing to know grew ever stronger.
Her attention then went to Claire. She and Jo had been looking for her, she remembered. Her brain was working hard to remember that part. But there was still no Claire, and no Jo. They were lost. And so was she. All she wanted to do was scream and shout their names, but she knew better then that. She knew the dangers in this jungle, and didn't want to attract it. So she spun around on the spot to get a better view of where she was, and decifered the most logical way to try and get back to camp. She was a doctor, sure enough. But a doctor of animals, and knew that Jack would be the best person to see about her injury, and what might have happened to her. She had no idea how long she had been out, and prayed that it had only been a few hours. So, Zoe started her treck through the jungle, focusing on trying to recognise any part of it that might lead her home.
The survivors remained on edge after Jo's reappearance. Claire had somehow found her way back from the Staff and was brought to the caves by Locke and Boone; she, too, had forgotten everything about her experience with the Others. Zoe alone remained missing. No matter how hard Jack and the others tried to get Jo and Claire to remember what may have happened to her, their minds were completely blank.
Jo wasn't quite sure where she fit into this new group she found herself in. Jack stayed by her side constantly, and she appreciated his concern but she was also restless and found his attention a little bit stifling. She was relieved when he wandered off in search of firewood one day, finally giving her a little bit of space to figure things out.
One particular question nagged at her, and Jo took the opportunity to find the answer. She strolled towards the beach camp and found Kate just coming in from a morning swim.
"Kate, do you have a moment?" Jo asked. Kate nodded and the two women sat down in the sand, facing the ocean.
"What's up?" Kate asked.
"I'm just curious about you and Jack. I've watched you together, and you seem very close. Are you two an item?"
Kate avoided Jo's eyes as she laughed nervously. "No, we're not. In fact, before you disappeared, you and Jack were a fairly new item."
Jo tossed a skipping stone into the angry ocean waves. "I don't remember that, Kate. I wish I could, but I don't. And I'm not sure I feel it anymore. There's someone else, another face, that keeps popping up in my mind, but I don't know who it is. He's not one of the survivors."
"I'll be honest with you, Jo. Before you disappeared you and I weren't exactly friends," Kate replied in a very low, almost wistful voice. "You didn't really confide in me, so I can't help you remember. But I can tell you that you were very much in love with Jack, and you were happy."
They were interrupted by Charlie, who ran up to them in a panic. "I need to find Jack," he declared, his face pale and his eyes bloodshot.
"He's collecting firewood near the caves. I can take you to him." Jo stood up immediately. She waved at Kate and smiled. "Thanks, Kate."
Jo sensed Charlie's urgency and walked as fast as she could toward Jack, with Charlie close behind.
"What's happened?" she asked him, concerned.
"I've just had a run-in with Ethan," Charlie responded. "I need to tell Jack."
"Who's Ethan?" Jo asked innocently.
It was now dark, and Zoe had no idea if she was any closer to getting home. She was cold, tired and still damp from waking up after it had been raining on her. But she refused to stop and rest until she found someone from camp, she knew it would be dangerous to stop and sleep somewhere now, she had no clue of the Others would find her, and she wasn't about to risk finding out.
As these thoughts ran through her head, there was rustling in the bushes up ahead. She paused for a moment, holding her breath hesitantly, unsure what to do. Then, whatever it was behind the bushes emereged, revealing himself to be Vincent. Walt's dog.
"Vincent! You frightened me half to death!" She cooed him softly and he padded up to her happily. She bent down to his level, giving him a friendly pat, relieved it was him she bumped into. "Right then boy, show me the way home." Vincent barked loudly, but in a tone that wasn't agressive, and started to trot off in another direction of the jungle. Zoe tilted her head, and smiled, before she followed after him, the moonlight being her only source of light, which danced and highlighted the jungle's edges.
"Is it much further boy?" Zoe asked Vincent softly after they had still been walking for a while. Vincent looked back at her, wagging his tail eagerly. "Good. I'm beat, and really really need to sleep."Vincent then stopped wagging his tail, and his shoulders became arched.
"What is it Vincent?" Zoe asked worridly, knowing this kind of behaviour, as Vincent started to growl softly. It was then Ethan emerged into sight. Zoe gasped with terror. He was dripping wet, his clothes completly soaked, like he had just been swimming or something. He glared at her viciously with a poisionous stare.
"You." She breathed quietly, hatred clearly detected in her voice. She managed to subside the tremor that was trying to break out.
"How did you do it Zoe? How did you help Claire escape?" Ethan asked as he took a step forward, making Vincent take a step back towards her, still growling.
"I'm not telling you." Zoe scoffed. "That plan might come in handy again some day." Ethan took another step forward.
"No matter." He shrugged. "We best get you back to Ben." He stated.
"I'm not going anywhere with you." She replied coldly, raising her voice. She knew she was near camp now, hopefully someone would hear her and come running.
"You don't have a choice." Ethan replied simply, as he shuffled closer to her, Vincent's growls growing deeper and more aggressive, as he backed further towards Zoe, trying to protect her. as Ethan got closer and closer, he started short shallow loud barks.
"You stay away from me!" She shouted at him. But Ethan ignored her, and continued coming towards her malvolently, then without warning, Vincent launched himself and started to attack Ethan, but Ethan, predicting his attacks, grabbed Vincent, and launched him off himself, allowing Vincent to collide into a tree, knocking breath out of him, and he whimpered in pain. Zoe screamed at the top of her voice, in concern for Vincent's injury and pain, and fear for herself as Ethan brushed off what he had just done and came towards her. Zoe took steps backwards, and her back hit into a tree. She wanted to run, but she suddenly became frozen on the spot from fear, like she always did when she was scared. She closed her eyes, looking into Ethan's was unbearable, and she flinched when Ethan grabbed at her, she screamed again, briefly before he put her hand over her mouth to shush her, she tried to fight him off, but he was strong, her eyes still tightly shut.
Then suddenly he let go. Zoe opened her eyes, breathing rapidly, her eyes darted across the jungle. He was gone. She then heard footsteps fast approaching nearby. Locke, Boone and Charlie ran into the clearing, staring in disblief. Charlie ran straight over to her and hugged her tightly, and she hugged him back, a weak smile spreading across her face, and she wept with relief.
"You have no idea how pleased I am to see you!" She cried. Locke approached them as they continued to embrace.
"What happened Zoe?" He asked her seriously. "We heard you screaming, and the dog barking."
"Ethan. It was Ethan!" Zoe explained, pulling away from Charlie. "He - he tried to.." She trailed off.
"Which direction did he go in?" Locke continued abruptly. Vincent got up grogily, whimpering slightly, and ran off back to camp.
"I - I - I don't know, it all happened so quick." Zoe mumbled, tears still streaming down her eyes.
"Leave her alone Locke, can't you see she's been through enough?" Charlie told him sharply.
"Not to worry." Locke replied gruffly. "I can try to track him, just some first hand idea of where he went would have helped." Locke gestured to Boone to follow him, and Charlie made to follow.
"No Charlie." Locke told him firmly. "Get Zoe back to camp." Charlie nodded curtly at him, and put an arm comfortingly around Zoe and led her back to camp, where Jack was at her side immediatly, examining every bruise, cut and injury she had, Charlie refusing to leave her side.
"Claire and Jo..." Zoe trailed off rapidly.
"They are here. They're safe." Jack interrupted her assuringly. "What happened? Where did they take you?"
"What?" Zoe asked confused.
"The Others - where did they take you?" Jack repeated.
"Take me?" Zoe asked frowning.
"You and Jo. You've been missing for almost two weeks now." Jack asked.
"Two weeks?" Zoe replied in disbelief. "No no, Jo and I only must've left half a day ago. Looking for Claire."
"No, that was twelve days ago." Jack assured her.
"But...no...that's impossible." Zoe replied. "I...something happened to me, Jo tried to help, but then she left me, and then..then... Ethan! I blacked out, then woke up, and I was alone in the jungle..." Jack cursed loudly.
"Jack!" Charlie ushered sharply as Zoe flinched by Jack's sudden outburst, grabbing Charlie's hand, squeezing it hard.
"They've done it to you too." Jack shook his head. "Jo and Claire don't remember anything either."
"Done what?" Zoe asked frowning.
"Given you amnesia." Jack answered her as he started to examine her head injury. "Although, you remember a hell of a lot more then they do. Jo doesn't even remember who the hell I am."
Zoe glanced at Charlie worridly. She was scared. She had lost two weeks of her memory. Her life. What could have happened in that time is anyones guess, and she didn't like it. Anything could have happened to her...they could have done anything to her...
"Well, this is certainly accidently or self inflicted. The angle is wrong for someone to have hit you or pushed you to cause this kind of injury. Either you fell and hit something, or you jumped." Jack informed her. "Think, you really can't remember how this happened to you?" Zoe shook her head hopelessly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zoe sat beside the camp fire, a blanket wrapped around her, as she stared into the flames. She sat alone for a while, thinking hard, trying to remember, but the more she tried to concentrate, the more her mind seemed blank, and made her feel more irritated and frustrated more then ever.
Charlie sat down beside her, after just checking on Claire. He didn't say anything. He sensed and understood how Zoe was feeling. She had entered the same state he was in after he had been left hanging and to die by Ethan. Many other people had tried talking to her, but she didn't respond.
Vincent then trotted up to her, nuding her hands that were placed on her knees. She didn't look away from the flames, she was too captivated and lost in her own thoughts, but she placed a hand on his head, storking him gently. Charlie remained by her side, and when others came to sit round the fire, he asked them kindly to leave and to give her some space, which she was peacefully greatful for.
Day 29 - Night
Jo watched Zoe carefully from across the bonfire. The newcomer certainly seemed familiar to Jo, but her memory remained vague. She shook her head in agitation as if to shake away the cloud of forgetfulness. Jack seemed confident her memory would return, perhaps in very small increments at first, now that she was settled among the survivors again. Jo wasn't so sure; everything seemed completely blank.
Jack sat beside her on the log and motioned towards Zoe. "She's a genuine mystery. If her head trauma is the cause of her memory loss, it just doesn't make sense." Jack reached for Jo's arm and turned it over, revealing the fading needle marks from Chase's injections. "Whatever they gave her, it's different from what they gave you, and I want to know why."
Jo shrugged and pulled her arm away, then stood up.
"Where are you going?" Jack asked, concerned.
"I told Locke and Sayid I would help them with rigging traps around the perimeter."
Jack suddenly turned very serious. "I don't think that's a good idea," he replied.
"I'm sorry, Jack, but you're not my minder." She turned away from the fire and walked a few steps. Jack followed her and placed his hand on her arm.
"The last time you wandered off without me you were kidnapped. I can't allow that to happen again."
Jo raised her eyes to meet Jack's and she saw they were filled with concern. She was touched, but her desire for independence was greater than her feelings for Jack.
She sighed heavily. "I know you care about me, Jack. And I appreciate it. But if you and I have such a long history, as you and everybody else has told me over and over again, and if I was so madly in love with you before I disappeared, why is it that I don't remember any of it? Shouldn't I be left with some lingering feeling to tell me it's true? I don't remember it, Jack. I'm very sorry. I hope those feelings do return, if they were as strong as you say. But right now I can take care of myself. You've warned me away from Locke because you don't trust him, but I have to find out for myself who's trustworthy and who isn't. If we're really lucky, my memories will return and lead me back to you."
Jack remained silent. He watched Jo as she walked away from the fire towards Locke and Sayid, who stood watching a few feet away.
Day 30
Zoe walked alone along the beach, distantcing herself away from the crowd of survivors that had chosen to stay on the beach. It was another beautiful hot day, but she couldn't embrace it. The shore that gently crept it's way up the sand trumbled over her feet, soaking the trainers she was wearing, possibly having now ruined them, but she didn't care.
From the corner of her eye, she spotted Charlie bustling about camp, Hurley joining him, and then they went off into the jungle. She turned away from mainly facing the ocean to watching Charlie walking away.
Zoe was on the beach, and is was night. She had heard, unknown to most about the plan for stopping Ethan's attack. One man, Steve, had already paid for the price of not returning Claire. It was now resorting to guns, and she wanted to be part of it, but still not being in the mood to talk, she didn't bother trying to ask for one of the guns. Instead, she kept an ear out.
They were using Claire as bait, and while everyone took their positions, she took hers, to keep a watchful eye on what happened. She choose to follow Charlie, she figured that he wasn't going to let Ethan go lightly, she could understand this, she had been through the same trama he had, and if she had the gun, she knew she wouldn't hesitate to shoot, to hell with interrogating him. If this guy was really as professional as he had proved, she guessed he wouldn't give into torturing easily.
She suddenly heard shouting up ahead through the jungle, and spotted Charlie loading the gun, cocking it ready to aim and fire, before running off into the jungle towards the commotion. From her hiding place, she followed, getting to the scene just after hearing six gun shots. Just in front of her, with his back to her, was Charlie, the gun still aimed at the now deceased Ethan on the ground, Locke, Kate, Sayid, Sawyer, Jack and Claire circled around him, and Charlie was silent. They all acknowledged Zoe's appearence but didn't say anything.
At the sight of Ethan dead on the ground, she turned and fled off through the jungle back to the beach, crumpling down on the soft sand and began to cry, burying her head in her hands.
Zoe sighed lightly, feeling this strange heavyness as she trudeged up the shoreline of the beach and towards the jungle, following Charlie and Hurley's tracks, ignoring the stares she was getting on the beach from the rest of the survivors. She followed them to a clearing, where Ethan's body was, wrapped up so she couldn't see his face, making it bareable for her to be in his presence, dead or alive. Charlie was the first to spot her.
"What are you doing here?" He asked her softly. She didn't answer him, but shook her head, giving him a look. She still wasn't in the mood to talk, amongst things, it felt like too much effort.
"We're going to bury Ethan, are you okay?" Hurley asked. Zoe nodded, but still didn't say anything. Hurley studied her for a moment. "You want to come, don't you?" Again, she said nothing, and took the lead, walking through the jungle towards one of the open fields, in which Charlie and Hurley followed, carrying Ethan's body over their shoulders. She sat down on the slope of the field and watched as they caught up with her, listening to them talk.
"Hurley, look, I appreciate the help. You don't have to. I killed Ethan, I can bury him." Charlie told him as they entered the clearing.
"Yeah, 'til he rises from the dead. Dude, I know how this works. This is going to end with us all running through the jungle screaming crying. He catches me first because I'm heavy and I get cramps." Hurley replied wittingly. Almost taking the words seriously, Zoe's heartbeat suddenly acclerated. She didn't even want to imagine the thought of Ethan rising from the dead. Although she knew really it would never happen, it was still a distrubing thought. She avoided eye contact with either of them for a moment. Charlie and Hurley lay Ethan's body to one side, Charlie not replying to Hurley's light-hearted comment, said nothing too, and began digging. Zoe then noticed the concern in Hurley's eyes, but she ignored them, and watched Charlie dig, not responding when spoken to.
