Hello, Ceri! That's exactly why I liked this board, too: We're all Michael fans. I will be learning Middle Welsh for my Ph.D. research! Oh, were you the person who said you were learning Latin in school? I thought it'd be cool to know an archaic language, but I imagined that it'd be very challenging and difficult. Is it? What is the difference between Welsh and Middle Welsh? Why are you learning it for your Ph. D research?

Thank you all for such a warm welcome ;D
And no Tigerlily unfortunatey I don't speak Welsh (although I do intend to learn - but it's so bloody hard!). I lived in England from the age of three and have only recently moved back home. I did however spend almost all of my childhood holidays in St. David's. i absolutely love the place, so beautiful, and the place I always return to in my mind if I need peace. You should most definately visit. Am in dire need of a "lost" fix - two weeks is too long to wait, hope Ben is in the next episode. Am so glad I found this forum with all you like-minded michael fans to keep me going through the drought.

What is the difference between Welsh and Middle Welsh? Why are you learning it for your Ph. D research? Yup, I'm learning Latin too! I think I'm a little bit crazy. I really want to be a Celtic medievalist, which means learning Latin, Old Irish and Middle Welsh - and quite possibly Breton. What have I gotten myself into??? I have no bloody clue!!! Languages don't really come easily for me, I have to work extremely hard at them. Part of me wants to just chuck it all and snag a bartending job at a cushy Hawaiian resort! Middle Welsh is the intermediate language between the ancient Brythonic language (a branch of the Celtic languages - the other branch evolved into Irish and Scots Gaelic) and modern Welsh. It's roughly equivalent to Middle English.
