I've been thinking about Michael's comment about the false intimacy of having him in our living rooms on our TV screens (or somewhere close to us on our monitors, phones, etc.) and decided that he MUST represent something for us....something that creates the transference....fuels our obsession...inspires us.
If it's not Michael the man, then it must be Michael the idea. So what's the big idea?
What set of thoughts/desires do we have upon which we place his face and body? (and voice and mannerisms and all the other juicy things about him)
Here's what I came up with...what Michael represents for me:
- the possibilty of attaining excellence at something - the possibility of accomplishment, making a mark in the world - sophistication, erudition, articulate expression - grown up appreciation of art and culture - the possibility of a brilliant, gentle, sweet, lively companion - the sweet smells of Hawaii and other foreign lands - delayed gratification of a life dream - high energy - happiness - meaningful work - love of life
Ok, you're next! What does Michael represent for you!

Excellent theme, Amidala64!!
For me Michael represents: - Precise comprehension of the applicability in a life; - Endurance and patience, skill to achieve the; - Huge original talent and high serviceability; - Wit and self-irony; - Intelligence and full absence of snobbery; - Light and positive energy. It would be desirable to be better and cleverer, knowing that such person lives on light! - Skill to hear the interlocutor and precisely to express the ideas. - Unique charm and charisma; - Thin taste in the literature and art; - He is more tremendous is sexual!!!

I like this thread ;D - for me he represents all of the above plus - persistancy (in a positive way) - humor - belief in oneself - a happy family - inspiration and lots more (just thinking about M. Emerson makes me smile right now)

I admire his acting abilities. He appears to be a nice guy despite his success which is often not the case and I admire that too. But I just have a fan crush on him. Mainly he is eye candy, a sex object and a pleasant diversion. If I really knew him, I probably wouldn't like him anymore which is why the "false intimacy" of the small screen works for me. I think I married the only guy I could stand for any length of time and we have been blissfully happy for more years than I care to admit.

Hmm. I don't know. Here I go being a black sheep...
I'm impressed and fascinated with Michael; the characters he brings to life actually capture my imagination (which is hard, because I'm admittedly not naturally imaginative when it comes to the performing arts). His work enriches my life. Knowing about things he has been involved in and learned about makes -me- want to learn about them. He brings things to life. That's why I come here...to learn more and to help share the things I find with other fans.
He's more of a teacher to me than a crush. You know in Murder Mysteries, how Michael's character randomly meets the older guy (who turns out to be Raguel) and is told this wonderful, mind-opening story? I'm like Michael's character, he's like Raguel.
He doesn't...really...represent something. He's just Michael. He's great at what he does and that's why he makes such a good teacher.
Am I hot for teacher? Well, not exactly. He's easy to have a crush on, but I don't spend a lot of time thinking about him that way. To steal Lisa's phrase, there can be some emotional recreation involved that's not related to empathizing with his characters, but it's not a -big- part of my interest in Michael. If it were just idolizing or crushing...I wouldn't be here. Crushes aren't worth as much effort as I've put into this site and the Wiki article. ;D

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and just say it....He's sexy, he's hott, he's gorgeous. That's what he represents to me.
With all that being said (and thought), I've came to know his acting abilities, which in the beginning I couldn't have cared about. But now I realize how wonderful and talented he is. Lets face it, when he first appeared on LOST, everyone questioned whether he was an other or not. That just shows how strong his acting ability is.
He seems like a really nice guy in person. He respects and appreciates his career and fans. He is an all around "good guy." I'm fine with being all fan girlish over him. It's quite fun and I've met some other really great fans that I adore and love *hugs everyone* because of him....
So thank you Michael!

I like what you said flummery. It's not about eye candy or a crush. I have a wonderful man at home and have no need for any of that. For me, it's the intelligence, the hard work put into his characters to make them just right, hearing about the round-about way he got to where he is and that's what's inspiring.

I like what you said flummery. It's not about eye candy or a crush. I have a wonderful man at home and have no need for any of that. For me, it's the intelligence, the hard work put into his characters to make them just right, hearing about the round-about way he got to where he is and that's what's inspiring. Amen. I admire how he makes his profession look so easy. I used to act in local theatre, and I can attest that it is not easy to convince the world that you are the person you are impersonating. It's not easy to remember your lines. It's not easy, at times, to make yourself vulnerable in front of so many people. Furthermore, Michael is able to take a despicable character and still instill a bit of humanity into that character so that the audience sees him as a human being. That’s magic, as far as I am concerned. I admire him for reciting words that were written down on the script and give me shivers as he interprets those words and delivers them to the audience. I admire him to be able to make all his characters distinguishable from each other. It is Michael Emerson who is delivering those lines, but it is his character that I am seeing. I've seen a number of different movies and TV shows that he was on, and I swear there is something physically different about each character he portrayed. He has the ability to make them just a bit different physically, to make them sound differently, to make them have a different personality. I have not yet seen him in legitimate theatre, but I definitely will make an effort to see him in a play next time he will be in one. Legitimate theatre has an electrifying experience to it. I bet Michael can make great magic there. So, in essence, I admire Michael Emerson the actor. The eye candy and the crush is part of the fun. But in the long run, there is a man with whom I’ve been sharing my household and his last name for over 36 years. Together this man and I brought two wonderful children into this world. Together, we traveled a road filled with sweetness and happiness, with an occasional sorrow thrown in for good measure. Together, we have been each others rock. We have history together. Sorry Michael, you don’t have a chance there. But, gosh, I do love watching you perform. You send shivers down my spine while I watch you weave your magic. And that’s what Michael Emerson represents to me.
