Emma waited outside the ring of ash surrounding Jacob’s cabin while Zoe and Locke cautiously walked up to the door.
“Do you want me to wait here for you, Zoe?” Locke kindly asked.
Zoe shrugged. “Don’t you want your own answers from Jacob?”
“I’ll have my turn,” he replied. “He’ll summon me when he needs me. But keep in mind, he doesn’t take kindly to people just stopping by. He won’t be terribly happy.”
“I know,” Zoe responded. “But I’m prepared. I can handle him.” She glanced at Emma waiting patiently for Locke to return. “You go on, John. I’ll be fine.” They talked privately for a few more minutes before Locke turned around and walked back to Emma.
He raised an eyebrow and looked at Emma with undisguised suspicion. “Now, you have something to show me?”
“I do.” Emma replied. “This way.”
***************** Emma and Locke walked for several miles, stopping frequently so Emma could rest. She was exhausted, but determined to see this through. All she really wanted was to return to Jack and to rest until her baby was ready for its debut, but this was something she felt compelled to do first. The island in general, and losing Desmond specifically, was beginning to make her more than a little crazy.
They finally reached the hidden door to the Orchid. Emma felt around the door for the latch that Sayid had uncovered, and the door swung open.
“What is this place?” Locke asked.
“The Orchid. It’s a psychological testing facility. The Others did tests on Desmond here.” Emma shivered as the memory of Desmond hooked up to electrodes and whirring machines invaded her mind.
“Why is Helen here?”
Emma shrugged. “That was probably Jacob’s decision. Come in.” Emma beckoned Locke inside. They walked through the tunnel towards the medical laboratory. The station was deathly silent. The bodies of the three doctors Sayid had killed had disappeared, but otherwise the facility was the same as when they had left it with Desmond.
Emma approached the testing room where Desmond had been held captive. She shivered again as she remembered Desmond’s vivid descriptions of the psychological torture the doctors had put him through, on Jacob’s orders. Today, Locke was going to experience the very same torture, and Emma would be satisfied that Desmond’s death was avenged.
“Helen’s not really here, is she?” Locke said in a low voice.
Emma laughed. “Of course not, John. You should have trusted your first instinct. You knew I was lying!”
Before Locke could respond, Emma felt a sudden sharp stab of pain. She gasped and nearly fell over, and leaned heavily on the hospital bed for support.
“What is it?” Locke rushed to her side and held her up. A second sharp pain shook her body. Emma’s face paled.
“Contractions!” she gasped. “But it’s too soon!”
“What do you need me to do?” Locke cried. He looked around wildly for something that would help her.
“Get Jack!” she yelled. “And Christian and Juliet! Bring them all! Please, Locke! Help me!”
Locke was clearly panic-stricken. “We’re more than five miles away from the village – I can’t leave you here alone for that long! What if something happens to you?”
“Go, Locke, please! You have to!”
“Wait for us!” he whispered to her. He squeezed her hand and ran out of the Orchid as fast as his legs could carry him.
The pain was unbearable. Emma flopped onto the hospital bed and braced herself for the long wait. She didn’t hear the bolts on the steel doors to the Orchid being locked, or the footsteps that were heading her way. The lights above the bed flickered, then went out completely. Darkness descended on the entire station.

Mel was taking her time getting back to the village when she heard something crashing through the jungle towards her. It came so quickly that she didn't have time to move out of the way and was knocked to the ground.
Mel picked herself up from the ground and went to look at who had run her down.
"So you really are still alive. I was half-hoping he made it all up." Mel said as she looked down at Locke and offered her hand.
Locke watched her warily before taking her hand.
"Why did you shoot me?" he asked as she helped him off the ground.
"Jacob told me to." Mel shrugged.
"Why?"
"As a test I guess. Don't worry, I'm not going to try again. I know you won't stay dead."
"That's good to know." Locke nodded.
"Where were you running to so quickly?" she asked.
"It's Emma, she's gone into labor. I need to find Jack, Christian, and Juliet."
Mel's brow furrowed as she thought back, "Jack's Emma?"
"Yes. She's early, the baby isn't supposed to come yet."
"Where is she?" Mel asked, worried for Emma.
"She's at the Orchid station."
"Were close to the village. Go find them now and John?"
"Yes?"
"Don't stop running."
John nodded and took off in the direction of the village. Mel started running the oppostire direction.
She reached the Orchid in good time but it had still been hours since John had left Emma alone. Mel hoped she was alright. Mel felt around until she found the door and tried pushing it open. It wouldn't budge.
"Come on." Mel said as she tried again and again, but it wouldn't open. It was like someone had jammed it.
"Emma!" Mel yelled as she pounded on the door. "Emma!" but it was no use. The only answer she recieved was the oddly silent jungle.

When the lights flickered back on, two men and one woman in scrubs and surgical masks stood over her.
Emma screamed. “Who are you?”
One of the men had kind brown eyes. “We’re the remnants of the crew that your friend Sayid massacred. We watched it happened, and he didn't know we were there. Now hold still, and you won't feel a thing.”
The three doctors easily overpowered her and placed metal restraints on her arms and legs.
“What are you going to do to me?” she yelled.
“We’re going to save your baby,” the man with brown eyes responded smoothly. He placed a chloroform-covered cloth over Emma’s mouth. “Just relax now.” His voice was mesmerizing. Against her will, Emma inhaled, and everything went black.
**** Emma woke up to find the doctor with brown eyes leaning over her. Her tongue felt thick and fuzzy, and it was hard to talk. Her belly felt numb, and when she looked down she saw a thick surgical wound with perfectly even stitches.
“Welcome back, Emma!” he said softly. He stroked her cheek to soothe her. “Just relax. You’ll feel better soon.”
“Where’s my baby?” She struggled against the restraints holding her tightly to the hospital bed.
He gestured towards an incubator a few feet away from her bed. Emma saw a tiny red body sleeping restlessly. “He’s right here. He arrived very early, but he’s healthy. He’s going to be okay.”
Emma managed a weak smile. “His name is Desmond.” she responded proudly.
“I’m afraid I’m going to have to put you under one more time.”
“No!” she fought against her restraints again. “Don’t! I want to hold him!”
“Just trust me, Emma. Don't fight it.” He placed the chloroform-soaked cloth over her mouth, and she immediately descended into unconsciousness.
*** When she awoke a second time, the Orchid was again completely silent. There was no sign of the three doctors, nor the incubator containing her tiny baby. Emma remained tied to the bed; fighting her restraints was utterly useless.
“Desmond!” she cried.
Her voice echoed throughout the empty laboratory. “Come quickly, Jack…” she moaned. Hysteria engulfed her when she realized nobody was there to hear her. They had all disappeared, and they had taken Emma's baby with them. The Orchid station was once again abandoned.

Leaning against the Orchid door Mel saw Jack, Christian and Juliet approach.
"Thank God!" she said under her breath. As Juliet ran up to her with tears in her eyes and hugged her.
"You're really alive!" she cried.
Mel hugged her old friend back, "Yeah, Jules I'm alive."
"Where is she?" Jack asked her frantically.
Mel looked at Jack hopelessly and tried not to notice Christian staring at her intently. "She's inside Jack. I couldn't get the door open, I'm sorry."
Jack shook his head, "You didn't do anything wrong, you just tried to help Emma."
Mel nodded, "I think if we all try we can get the door open."
"Okay, let's do it." Jack said, worry evident on his face.
They all crowded around the door. Christian stood next to Mel and she did her best to ignore him.
"On three." Jack said and they nodded. "One, two, three!"
They used all of their strength to shove the door open and thankfully it moved. Finally there was an open path down into the Orchid.
"Come on Jack." Christian said darkly, "Let's go find you wife."
Mel looked down at the two men went in front of her. Juliet placed a comforting hand or her shoulder and gave her a knowing look before following them. Mel looked after them, she had a really bad feeling about this. She took a deep breath and walked down into the dark.

Emma heard voices coming from the main entrance to the Orchid.
"Jack!" she screamed. "I can't move!"
"Emma!" he yelled back.
Jack and Christian, followed closely by Juliet and Mel, barreled into the room where Emma was still chained to the hospital bed. Juliet, Mel and Christian released the restraints that held her back. Emma sat up slowly and rubbed her raw wrists. Jack immediately drew her into his arms and kissed her tear stained face.
"Tell me what happened," he said softly.
"They took our baby boy!" she sobbed.
Jack's face paled. Christian, Juliet and Mel stood back and watched the scene in horror.
"Who took him, Emma?"
"I don't know." She buried her face in Jack's chest. "There were three of them...they're doctors, and they worked here. They watched Sayid kill their colleagues when we rescued Desmond."
Jack looked at his father grimly. "We're going to find them." he reassured her, but the fear in his face revealed his uncertainty in the matter.

Zoe took a deep breath as she braced herself before walking upto Jacob's shack. She glanced through the window. It was dark unside despite a single candle burning on what looked like a dining table. Zoe took another deep breath before she turned the handle on the door and stepped inside.
The cabin was completly empty, and very silent, not even the wood of the cabin creaked, or did she hear the breeze outside bang against the window. Zoe knew this kind of silence, and that it wasn't good. All she wanted to do was turn and run back out again, but the atmosphere was so tense that she froze herself to the spot.
"I know you're here Jacob." Zoe called out to the room as she glanced around at the furniture and pictures on the wall. The cabin remained silent.
"What's the point in hiding? Are you afraid of me or something?" Zoe continued mockingly. The room began to shake, violently, objects falling off of shelves and pictures tilting from where they hung, and the one candle that was lit went out, plunging Zoe into darkness.
"I knew you were." Zoe continued, smirking. The shaking stopped suddenly, and all the lights in the cabin turned on. "And you know why I am here, and that's why you're scared."
"I'm scared of no-one!" Jacob hissed agressivly. The cabin shook again slightly, and then he appeared, in his rocking chair. Zoe held her breath. She had never encountered Jacob before, so didn't know what to expect. He looked nothing like she imagined. He was old, he had grey hair and a coarse beard.
"Oh, but I think you are." Zoe replied, taking a step closer towards him.
"Stand back!" He spat, but Zoe ignored him.
"No." She replied flatly. "Not until my questions are answered." The lights went out again, and the cabin began to shake violently and the lights went out again. Zoe was then slammed against the wall just as all the windows smashed, she fell to the floor with broken glass spraying over her. Zoe covered her head instinctively to protect her head from the glass. The shaking stopped just as suddenly as it had started again.
Zoe stook up, glaring at the rocking chair which was now empty, but rocking slowly.
"I'm. not. afraid. of. you." She told Jacob sternly. "The sooner you realise that, the quicker I can leave. I'm not like the rest of them."

"There's nothing here." Mel said as she came back into the room where they had found Emma. Jack and Emma were still at the table and Christian stood at the back of the room. Juliet came back in soon after her.
"Anything?" Christian asked.
Juliet shook her head, "It's like they were never here."
"There has got to be something." Jack said desperately.
Mel shook her head and ran her hands through her hair in frustration. Her heart went out to Emma and Jack. She knew what it was like to have your child taken from you and taken from your womb no less.
Mel said the words she didn't want to say and she knew no one else wanted to hear, "We have to talk to Ben."
"Why?" Christian asked forcefully, anger showing on his face.
Mel looked at him, "Because he knows this island better than anyone and there is a good chance he knows where they have gone."
"You think Ben did this?" Emma asked weakly. "Did he tell those people to take Desmond from me?"
Mel shook her head sadly and went to Emma's side, "I'm sorry Em, but it's a possibility. This wouldn't be the first time he's done this."
"Yes, he did the same thing to you. He took William from you so why would you even consider trusting him?" Christian asked.
"Are you really one to point fingers Christian? You kidnapped William from me as well!" Mel took a deep breath, "This is not the place for this."
She turned back to Jack, "You staying here?"
Jack nodded, "For the time being until Emma is ready to move and I want to check the place again."
"Ok, I'll go see what I can get out of Ben. Jules, want to come with me?" she asked.
Juliet stepped forward to answer but was cut off by Christian. "No." he said, "I'll come with you. After all, this is my grandchild we are talking about."
Mel glared at Christian for a full minute before looking at Juliet. She shrugged, "It's okay. I'll stay with Jack and Emma."
Mel turned to Emma and Jack, "It's okay, we'll find him."
Without looking at Christian Mel made her way to the door of the Orchid and out into the jungle. She didn't bother to see if Christian followed.

Mel and Christian left the Orchid together, the tension between them obvious to anybody who watched them.
Emma raised her face to meet Jack's. "What do we do now?" She whispered to him.
"We don't stop looking until we've found him," he replied. "Do you feel strong enough to stand?"
Emma nodded. Jack and Juliet helped her to stand up. She felt wobbly and weak, and immediately sat back down on the bed. "Maybe not quite yet."
"Rest here. Juliet and I will search this place again. There has to be another exit that they used. Can you tell me how you came to be here in the first place?"
Emma blushed hotly, embarrassed by her own irrationality. "I brought Locke here. I was going to...well, I was going to try..." Emma sighed. Jack wouldn't understand. "It doesn't matter. It was a really stupid idea. But I'm grateful to him for bringing you here."
"It was a stupid thing to do." he responded. "But you're going to be okay. They did a clean surgery. And we're going to find Desmond."
"Jack..." Emma hesitated, unwilling to arouse Jack's irritation any further. "If you don't like the name..."
Jack shook his head and gave her a reassuring smile. "Desmond was a friend to both of us, and he lost his life while he was looking after you. I think it's only fitting."
Emma tried to smile back, but she was haunted by a vision of her missing baby. "We have to find him, Jack!"

"Would you slow down?" Christian asked Mel.
Mel continued her quick pace, "No, we're in a hurry."
Christian grabbed her arm and swung her around to face him, "What is wrong with you?"
"There is nothing wrong with me, now let me go."
Christian released her arm and lowered his head, "You really don't remember anything about our life together?"
"Who told you? Wait, only one other person knew, Ben." Mel said stepping away from Christian. Being so close to him made her feel uncomfortable.
"Yes, he took a little too much pleasure in telling me you didn't remember being my wife. Where is your wedding ring?" he asked noticing her bare hand.
Mel looked him straight in the eye, "I lost it."
"Right." Christian snorted.
"I don't understand why you are so upset." Mel began, "You're not the one who lost at least six months."
"You don't understand?" Christian said, becoming angry again. "My wife, the woman I love and who until recently loved me, who I gave up everything for doesn't know who I am!"
"I know who you are Christian. You are the man who broke my heart when I was in college and you're the man who kidnapped my son."
"I thought you'd forgiven me for that!" Christian said desperatley.
Mel shook her head, "Right now, that is all I remember about you. To tell you the truth, if I had a gun I probably would have shot you by now."
The color drained from Christian's face as he listened to his wife's threat. How could one day change everything. Not one day ago she had been his loving wife who would have done anything for him. Now she wanted to kill him.
"We should get going. We still need to speak with Ben." Mel said, trying not to look at Christian's torment.
"Why him?" Christian asked through clenched teeth.
"What?"
"Why Ben? You went to see him first and you can't stop talking about him. What is it about Ben that fascinates you so?" he yelled.
Mel took a step back at the forcefullness of his words. "Can you really not understand?" she said and turned away to start walking.
"Answer me!" Christian screamed.
Mel whipped around, her face red with anger, "Because I'm in love with him!" she yelled.
Christian froze. "No you're not."
Mel couldn't deal with this anymore. She turned her back on Christian and began walking towards the village, towards Ben.
Christian didn't move, he couldn't. He never thought he would hear those words from Mel's mouth. He stood there dumbfounded as she left him alone in the jungle.

Sophie sat up on the kitchen counter as Richard found some juice and poured it in two glasses.
"Do you ever think about us?" Sophie suddenly said. Richard stopped pouring and looked up at her. He nodded and smiled and then put the lid back on the carton and putting in the fridge. He handed Sophie her glass. "Ever think what if? I mean if i wasn't with Ben. Do you think we would of been together?"
"Whats this all about?" he asked, sitting down on the arm of a sofa.
"Just curious" she smiled before taking a sip.
"Its all i think about Soph. I care for you. I use to get angry at the way Ben use to treat you because it wasn't what you desvered. He's changed in a good way now........ You know you should go and see him and molly. I know you miss them."
"Richard i can't."
"Yes you can. Go..." he sighed.
Sophie put her glass down and then closed her eyes. She opened them finding herself next to Mollys cot, she smiled and stroked her babys hair as she slept peacfully.
"Sophie?" A surprised Ben asked
..........................................................................................
"How it go?" Richard asked as Sophie wiped her tears looking at herself in the mirror.
"He wants me to go back. He sounded desperate."
"Because he loves you. We've been here about 5 days now and nothings happened. Your fine you can control it, we been working hard on your powers you can handle them."
"Ok.... tomorrow will go." she smiled. Richard went over and hugged her, he wiped a tear from her face. They both looked at each other for moment when he leant into kiss, there lips touched when Sophie heard something she pulled away.
"Whats wrong?" he asked. Sophie put her finger on his lips to silence him. She peeked down the dark corridor seeing two men walking down with torches.
"They here! He's found us!" she whispered.

Ben answered the door still shocked from Sophie disappearing. "Mel." he said dully. "What are you doing here?"
"I need to talk to you." she said, out of breath.
"Are you alone?" he asked.
"For now, I'm sure my dear husband will be along shortly."
Ben nodded, "Come in."
As soon as Mel entered the house Ben threw her up against the wall and wrapped a strong hand around her throat.
Mel's eyes widened.
"You let me believe she was gone. You let me believe that you hurt Sophie." he seethed.
Mel pulled in vain at his hand as it tightened. "You have caused me so much trouble, I should kill you now and be done with you."
Mel pleaded with Ben with her eys but he wasn't having any of it. He shook her roughly and threw her against the wall again.
Suddenly Ben was tackled from the side. Ben was forced to let go of Mel's throat as he fell to the floor. Mel sank to the floor herself as she watched Christian slam his fist into Ben's face. "Don't you ever touch her!" he yelled.
Finally Christian stood glaring down at Ben and backed away. Ben stood slowly, wiping blood from his mouth. He looked down at Mel who was lightly feeling the bruised flesh on her neck.
Ben paled and he looked instantly sorry. He knelt down next to Mel and she noticed Christian had to restrain himself from knocking Ben over again.
"Mel, I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over me. I just saw Sophie and..." he trailed off.
"If you just saw her then obviously she's still alive." Mel spat feeling it took to much energy to be angry. He voice softened, "Don't worry Ben. I won't be trying to kill Sophie any longer. It wouldn't do me any good anyway."
Ben offered his hand and helped Mel off the floor. "Thanks."she said softly.
"You're thanking him!" Christian said obviously aggravated.
Mel turned towards him, "Are you going to start this again?"
"He just tried to kill you! How have you already forgiven him?" Christian cried angrily. "Oh that's right, you're still in love with him. Here," he said as he threw something at her feet, "I hope you're happy together."
Mel watched Christian storm out of the house. She knew that she should have been more thankful to him for saving her life but in honesty, he hadn't really given her a chance.
Ben kneeled down and picked up the item Christian had thrown down. He looked up at her from the floor and held his hand out. Mel saw her wedding ring that she had purposely dropped outside the day before.
Ben made to hand it to her but she couldn't move to take it. She looked at Ben kneeling before her and reflected that the scene was what she had always wanted. How long had she hoped for Ben to get down on one knee and offer her a wedding ring?
But this wasn't her dream, this was a horrible reality. Ben wasn't really proposing and the ring he held had been given to her by another man.
Ben sighed and clutched the ring in his hand as he stood and questioned her, "You still love me?"

Sophie quickly leant back against the wall as the two guys walked by talking to each other. She peered out again seeing it was clear she went out into the corridor heading behind them. "What are you doing!" Richard whispered. "Lets get out and warn Ben." he said.
"No!" she whispered back and went down the corridor. Finding the two men looking around at the gas tanks, computers and other things. Sophie and Richard watched them ducking behind a box. She watched as one of the men had disappeared somewhere. She grabbed her gun from the back of her jeans and Richard got his ready. "After 3, we go 1............2...........
"Hello Sophie!" as voice spoke behind her, "I'd put the gun away if i was you." She heard the man as he aimed a gun at them both.

Mel sighed in frustration, "As far as I know I never stopped."
"Mel."
"Stop Ben. It doesn't matter now does it? You're married, my feelings for you are a moot point."
"I'm sorry but I can't change the past Mel."
"I just wish I could remember it."
Mel moved to look out the window, "So there is a war? Who should I be looking out for?"
Ben chuckled, "Basically everyone except your husband, Jack, Emma and Juliet."
"Oh God, Emma." Mel remembered. "Ben, Emme was at the Orchid and someone stole her baby."
"What?" Ben asked.
"They claimed they had been there when Desmond was being held captive. They took her child right out of her."
Mel moved closer to Ben, "Tell me the truth, do you know who is was? Do you know where Emma and Jack's baby is?"
Ben looked away, "I might have an idea." he said softly.
"Well?"
"I can't tell you, not yet. It might put you in danger."
Mel laughed, "Didn't you hear me earlier Ben? I can't die. What could possibly be more dangerous than that?"
Ben looked puzzled at her claiming immortality but went on, "Trust me, there are worse things."
"Where are our children Ben? I'd like to see them."
Ben looked surprised, "They're at you house of course."
"My house?" Mel asked, then it dawned on her, "with Christian."
"Yes." Ben nodded.
"I guess that is where I'll be then. You're going to help Emma and Jack right?"
"Of course, I'll do what I can."
Mel found it hard to decipher what Ben was really thinking but didn't have the energy to push the subject.
"Bye Ben." she said as she left his house.
"Goodbye Mel." he said as he watched her from the porch, still clutching her wedding ring in his hand.

Jack and Juliet conducted a thorough search of the Orchid and found no clues. Frustrated and angry, Jack returned to Emma where she rested on the hospital bed. By this time she had gotten some strength back. .
"We found nothing." Jack declared. His eyes began to tear up, but he held them back. "I think we should get you home. We'll see what Ben knows about these people, and take it from there. Do you feel strong enough to walk?"
"I do," Emma responded. She hopped off the hospital bed, surprised to be feeling better so soon after her surgery.
Emma gazed behind her as they left the Orchid. This was the first and last place she had seen her baby; leaving it behind felt a little like she was giving up on him, but she had no choice. The Orchid wasn't going to yield its secrets so easily.
**********
Jack gathered some fruit while Juliet and Emma rested by a stream. Emma gazed into the distance, lost in her thoughts, and was startled when Juliet spoke to her.
"I'm so sorry this happened, Emma. I know I haven't made things easy for you, but I was just in so much shock when you and Jack...you know." Juliet placed her hand on Emma's arm in a gesture of friendship. "But I'm wiling to put the past behind us. There are so few of us left, we need to be able to trust each other now. I will help you find Desmond."
Emma smiled warmly at Juliet, happy to have such a strong and determined ally at last, after all the times she had offered the olive branch to her and been coldly rejected. "Thank you," was all she could say in return.

Sophie laid her gun down to the ground as well as Richard. "Stand up with your hands behind your heads!" The man ordered at them. Both of them stood up and he pointed his gun probing Sophies back, "Move!" he shouted pushing her forward. They both walked to the other man was.
"Well well if it ain't Sophie." The other man said. "Chris cuff them both!" he ordered to the other guy who was holding the gun behind them. Pulling cuffs from his pockets he cuffed Sophies wrists tightly making them cut into her wrists. She glared at him as she watched him do the same to Richard. "We've been looking for you Sophie! He wants to see you! He's pretty mad at you for killing his team members in cold blood."
"I'm doing what was right!" she snapped. "And if you won't let us go i'll do the same to you!"
Nathan started to laugh, "And who told you to do that Sophie? Hmm Benjamin Linus by any chance?" he questioned her. Not replying she just glared. "I thought so..." the man turned to fiddle at the computer.
"Hey what are you doing!" Richard asked.
"Shutup!" Chris shouted and kicked him in the head knocking him out.
"Now its time for you to work for us!" Nathan turned around.
"What?" she said. "I would never." She spat. "You people are monsters."
"Is that what Ben told you? Because from what i heard its the other way around. Its funny your married to the guy and you have no clue of what hes capable off! Now your going to work for us because if you don't Molly will get killed!"
"Noooooooo!" Sophie screamed. "Your bluffing."
"No i'm not. All i have to do is push this button and gas this whole island. Just like your sweet husband did!" He started to push his finger down near the button.
"Alright! What do you want!" she asked. Nathan smirked.
"I want you too kill your husband!"
