Mel sank to the jungle floor and braced her back against a nearby tree. She was so overcome with emotions that she couldn't think straight. It had been hard enough when Christian left the the first time but reliving it sent a knife through her heart. She found she didn't even have the strength to get up and get moving.
So that was how Ben found her. Her head in her hands, tears falling from her eyes.
He knelt down to her and touched her arm. Mel immediatley jumped into his arms and pulled his close. Surprised, Ben wrapped his arms around her and held her. He admitted to himself that this felt nice, felt like home.
"I killed Richard." Mel whispered.
Ben nodded.
"But I don't think he will stay dead." she added. "Did you kill Keamy?" she was afraid to ask but knew she needed to.
"I tried." Ben said dryly. "But I don't think I suceeded."
"Good." Mel said still clinging to Ben. "Christian left me, in the past. I begged him not to but he still left."
"You're father sent him away on a mission. He didn't think he would be gone so long. But he was."
Mel pulled back and looked at Ben, "Long enough for you to find me."
"Yes." Ben admitted, "But I never could have guessed you were his daughter."
"You wouldn't have wanted anything to do with me then." Mel smiled bitterly.
"You're right. If I had know that you belonged to Charles Widmore I never would have brought you here for me."
Mel looked away, she didn't want to go over their major relationship flaws yet again. "Where is Keamy?" she asked.
"You know I can't tell you that." Ben straightened, their moment over.
"You can, you just won't."
Ben stood and reached a hand down to help her up. Mel ignored it as she got to her feet.
"You can't let me die Ben."
Ben sighed, "We've been through this already. I have to."
"Damnit Ben! I'm pregnant!" Mel yelled at him.
Ben whipped around to face her as his eyes got wide, "You're what?"
"What, are you surprised that for once it won't be your baby?" Mel spat.
Ben regained his composure but Mel could tell he was upset, "I don't care one way or the other." he lied. "Who is the father? Christian or Keamy?"
"I don't know Ben. But I will tell you this. If your little plan does work and I die becase you kept me from my Constant. You better hope that Christian and Keamy never found out I was carrying one of their babies. Because if they do, they're going to kill you."

Sophie ran towards the jungle not knowing where she was really going, she bumped into John,
"John! Richard he's in..."
"I know! C'mon follow me." he said taking Sophies hand and pulling her with him.
..............................................
John stopped running when they found Richard on the ground seeing the blood around him. Sophie ran other and fell on to her knees beside him. "Richard!" she said breathless. His hand grabbed Sophies and squeezed it. Sophie looked in his eyes and then propped his head up on her leg. "Stay with me Richard." she whispered. As he breathing started to slow. John ripped richards arm sleeve off and tried using it to stop the bleeding. "You can't go....Thomas needs you" Sophie whispered.
"Ben... Ben will show him the way." Richard mumbled squeezing Sophies hand he looked at her for one last time.
"I always loved you Sophie." That was it he was gone he stopped breathing. Sophie cried as she looked up to John.
"This is not suppose to happen." John mumbled.
Sophie closed his eyelids and the kissed his lips to say her goodbye. When this glow surround her body and his. John took a step back, as this orange glow burst through the jungle. Richards eyes reopened and placed his hand against Sophies faced as he kissed her back. His whole body was healing. Sophie was helping him. Just like she done with Ben and John in the past. But this time it was different. Something was happening between them.
Sophie pulled away, as she gasped for air. Like everything was sapped out of her. Her eyes fluttered as she collapsed. But john quickly caught her in time.
Ben was still with Mel, as they both saw the bright light in the distance.
"What was that?" Mel asked.
Ben didn't reply but he knew exactly what had just happened.

After the bright light had died down Mel turned to Ben who was deep in thought.
"It was her wasn't it?" she asked.
Ben looked at her, "You know this place as well as I do, what do you think?"
"Damnit!" Mel said. "He's going to come after me, you know he is!"
"Richard will be preoccupied for the time being." Ben said. "He'll have other things to think about besides you killing him."
Mel sighed, "Why couldn't you have picked a girlfriend who couldn't bring people back to life?"
"Wife, she's my wife." Ben chided.
"Whatever."
"I think you're ignoring the bigger picture here.".
"Am I?" Mel asked.
"You're pregnant." Ben said.
"You don't have to remind me!" Mel cried.
"This doesn't change anything." Ben told her.
Mel could have sworn she felt her heart skip a beat, "What?"
"I'm not going to change my mind."
Mel stalked up to Ben, "What if this was your child? What if I was pregnant with William or Bella? Would you let me die then?"
"It is not the same. We haven't been together in a long time."
"Don't you have a selective memory! Did you forget when we were in the jungle? Right before you told me you were going to marry Sophie?"
Ben shook his head, "That was far to long ago."
"What, maybe five or six months? Do you know how far along I am Ben? Do you want to take the chance you could be killing your own child?"
Ben was silent, his eyes studying Mel.
"Now, I am going to turn and walk away. And if you truly want me dead, then you're going to have to shoot me."
Mel sent one last glance at Ben before turning her back on him and beginning to walk. She let out a breath she hadn't known she'd been holding when she was twenty yards away.
'He's actually going to let me go.' she said to herself. She was so relieved she didn't hear Ben pull the hammer back on the gun. When he had pulled the trigger it was already too late.

"Sophie" John tapped her cheeks trying to get a response. "Sophie!" he repeated. Richard sat up as he looked over, suddenly her chest started to rise up and down. She was breathing. Her eyes opened up and looked up to John. "She's ok!" John smiled. Richard was relieved, but realised what he said to her and what they just did. That spark/connection had been regnited again.

Emma and Jack glanced nervously at each other as they heard a number of nearby gunshots. Emma immediately imagined Sayid had taken his rage out on Oliver and Frank; Jack's thoughts drifted to his father, who had been missing for several days.
"We'd better see what's going on," Jack said earnestly. "I think I can get by without the crutches now. Why don't you drop Desmond off with Juliet; tell her he's had the vaccine, and he's healthy. I'll meet you in the courtyard."
Emma nodded, but found it difficult to hide her distaste at having to encounter Juliet. "I'll be there."
****
Emma met Jack in the courtyard after dropping Desmond off with Juliet. The tension between the two women was still apparent, but Juliet cared enough for Desmond to agree to watch him for Emma.
Emma was surprised to see Oliver and Frank tightly bound to two trees, both very much alive. Sawyer lounged by another tree, watching them warily. Jack and Sayid were deep in discussion as Emma cautiously approached.
Sayid turned to face Emma. "Jack tells me his father hasn't been seen in some time. I've given my word that I will investigate Christian's disappearance."
Emma glanced at Jack, and he nodded his head in approval. "I'd like you to go with him, Emma."
Emma pulled Jack aside and whispered to him. "Are you sure, Jack?"
"You told me you were finished with Sayid. I trust you. I also want to keep him away from Oliver; there is no telling what Sayid might do to him in revenge."
He's testing me, Emma thought to herself. This was her chance to prove that she would be faithful to Jack.
"Jack, I don't think I'm the best person to find your father. He's sort of the reason I..."
"We don't have much time," Jack interrupted her. "Someone has been shot, and we need to deal with it, no matter who it is."
"Okay," Emma sighed, resigned. She walked over to Sayid. "Let's go."

Mel sank to the ground as blood flowed from the gunshot wound on her shoulder. The bullet had gone all the way through and the pain was incredible. She fell onto her back and stared up at the sky. Suddenly Ben appeared above her. He knelt quickly by her side.
"I'm sorry." he whispered as his hand smoothed her hair from her face. "I'm so sorry."
Mel watched as the tears formed in his eyes and trailed slowly down his cheeks. It felt like it took and lifetime for them to travel their path.
Still in unable to believe that Ben had actually shot her, when he had known she was pregnant, Mel couldn't form words. She searched for Ben's free hand and squeezed it, begging him to stay with her.
Ben shook his head, "I can't, I can't." He bent down and kissed her swiftly on the lips and lingered there as if he himself was unable to let go. Finally he pulled away and stood. With one last look at her he turned and walked away leaving Mel alone in the jungle to bleed to death.
Mel tried to call out for someone, anyone but she couldn't. At the edge of her consciousness she felt a familiar sensation. She was about to time travel again and somehow she knew that when she returned to the island it would be for the last time.
She gathered all her strength and filled her lungs up with air. Just as she felt herself slipping she called the one man, the only man really, who could save her. "Martin!!!!!!!" she cried into the still jungle. But she was gone before she could see if it did any good.

"I'm surprised Jack trusts me to be alone with you." Sayid remarked as they hiked through the jungle towards the sound of the gunfire.
"He's testing me, I'm sure of it." Emma responded.
"You've made your choice, then?" Sayid stopped and turned to face Emma.
She lowered her eyes, unable to meet his gaze. "I'm sorry, Sayid."
"Don't be," he replied gruffly. "I knew from the beginning it would end this way." He moved closer to her and placed his hands on her cheeks, lifting her face to meet his. "But it doesn't mean I love you any less," he added with genuine tenderness. "I have no regrets."
"No regrets," Emma repeated, and smiled warmly at him.
They were interrupted by a woman screaming the name "Martin!!!!"
"It sounds like Mel," Sayid observed. "And where Mel is..."
"...Christian can't be far behind," Emma finished his thought.
Sayid handed Emma one of his two guns. "For protection," he told her. They continued to trek towards Mel's unexpected scream.

Keamy heard Mel scream and without thinking turned and ran in the direction her voice had come from. He ignored the pain in his side from where Ben had shot him, his only thought was to find Mel.
**************************************************
When Mel opened her eyes the first thing she noticed was that the pain was gone. She looked down and that two things were different. She no longer had a gun shot wound and she wasn't pregnant.
'Then that's it.' she said to herself. 'I'm in the past. I have to find Martin.'
A quick look around told her she was on her old college campus. If she wanted to make it back to where she grew up she would have to hurry.
***************************************************
Keamy crashed through the jungle. He didn't care if he was making a lot of noise that would attract unwelcome people. He had heard the complete anguish in Mel's voice when she had screamed for him. He wasn't going to let her suffer anymore.
When he finally did find her he stopped in his tracks. He stood at the edge of a small clearing. His dear Mel's body sprawled in the center. She had been shot and there was blood everywhere. Her hand had fallen protectivley over her stomach, she wasn't moving.
"Mel!" he cried as he rushed to her side and fell to his knees. He reached down to feel for a pulse and found it was so faint he could barely feel it.
"No! Babe you can't die! Come back Mel, come back!" he yelled at her as he gathered her in his arms and cradled her close. "Come back." he whispered fiercely.
***************************************************
Mel slammed on the brakes in front of her old house. Seeing is again brought back so many memories it was hard to block them out. She climbed out of the car and ran to the house next to hers. She banged loudly on the door. "Martin!" she yelled.
No one answered so she repeated her previous action, "Martin, please come to the door Martin!"
Mel gave a cry of relief when he opened the door. The outside light showed him not as she knew him but as a young man again, which he really was.
"What do you want?" he asked gruffly.
Now that Mel had found him she wasn't sure what to say to him.
"Well?" he spat.
"I'm sorry Martin."
"What, your new boyfriend get tired of you already? Or did the doctor see what a horrible person you are as well?"
Mel flinched at his hurtful words but she also saw the hurt inside of him. "Martin, "I'm sorry I left you, turned away from you. It was a mistake, maybe the biggest one I'll ever make. You are a wonderful man and I never should have treated you that way."
Martin shifted his weight to lean against the doorframe, "So, you think that changes anything? Did you think you could come here and say some nice words and everything would be back to normal?"
Mel shook her head, "No, I know things can never go back to how they were. But I have an idea of how they will become."
"What do you mean?" Martin asked.
Mel felt herself starting to slip away, she needed more time! But it didn't seem she was going to get it.
She raised her hand and laid it gently on Martin's cheek. "I love you Martin, I always have and something inside of me always will. I gave you reason to give up on me once and I regret it. We will be together again, I know it. Please don't give up on me again and I promise I won't give up on you."
Martin's hand covered her own, "Mel, babe, I never stopped, you must know that."
Mel blinked away tears, "I know." She leaned forward and kissed him softly before leaning back. She removed her hand from his cheek and turned away from him. She turned back as she had a last thought, "When my father comes to you, go with him. Come to the island."
Martin nodded though he didn't understand what she meant and Mel knew it would be years before he did.
"I love you Mel." Martin said clearly.
"I love you too Martin." she said through her tears and let the blackness take her away.
***************************************************
Mel's eyes shot open and she realized she was no longer on the ground. She was being held in someone's arms.
"Come back babe, come back. Mel wake up!" she heard repeated over and over.
"Martin?" she whispered and he froze. He laid her back down so he could see her face. When he saw her eyes were open he smiled.
"Hey babe." he said squeezing her hand.
Mel reached her hand up and laid her palm on his cheek. He closed his eyes as if in memory. "You came." she whispered.
He nodded, "I had no idea what you meant until your father showed up at my door. When he told me about this place, about the island, I knew this was what you had been talking about. I couldn't say no then."
Mel smiled, "Thank you for coming for me."
Keamy kissed her, "I told you it was destiny."

"You ok?" Richard asked, after Sophie sat for a moment to get her strength back.
"Yes....you?" she asked.
Richard nodded, then smiled. "Thank you for coming. For helping." Sophie smiled then stood up, she felt awkward around Richard. Yes she was saving his life, but apart of her felt guilty for kissing another man.
"I have to get back to my children." starting to walk off. John went up ahead of her to take the lead and Richard followed catching up.
"That wasn't just saving my life was it?" he asked as they walked along.
"It was just a kiss Richard."
"It was more than a kiss. You felt it as much as i did!"
"No, it meant nothing!" she frowned. Speeding up her pace to walk up with John.

Mel and Keamy's reunion was interuppted when they heard something moving in the jungle.
"It's close." Mel said still lying on the ground. The bullet wound in her shoulder making it too painful to sit up.
Keamy slowly picked up his gun from the ground next to him. He aimed it at the direction of the noise.
"Someone is out there." he whispered.
Mel nodded, knowing that whoever it was there was a good chance they meant them harm.
Keamy looked down at Mel, "If anything goes wrong, you run. Do you understand?"
Mel nodded, ignoring the pain shooting through her body and pulled herself up. She leaned in close to Keamy's ear, "I love you." she whispered.
Keamy gave a sharp jerk of his head to show her understood.
"You can't die Martin." she whispered again as she reached to the holster at his hip and withdrew his handgun. "You can't die because I'm going to have a baby."
Keamy froze and took his eyes off of the jungle to stare at her.
Mel smiled as she let her own gun follow his aim, "Your baby."
With his free hand Keamy found hers and gave it a quick squeeze, "Then we are going to live for a long, long time."
They heard the noise from the jungle again and they both whipped their heads around. If whoever walked out of those tress meant them harm, they wouldn't live long to see it through.

"Pregnant?" Hurley repeated.
"Yeah." Zoe repeated quietly. "Sawyer's. He doesn't know it yet though. Well ... he might now. I don't know."
"Why do you look so worried? You should be happy." Hurley asked her.
"Yes. Well. Sawyer told me he had a daughter before...and he abandonded her. Tried to pretend she didn't exist." Zoe explained. "What if he abandonds me? Abandonds his child?"
"He hasn't abandonded you yet has he? You said yourself he treats Charlie like his own! He's probably changed alot since then. I know he has. He is different. The crash....it changed him." Hurley replied reasonably. "I don't think you have anything to be afraid of."
"The bad thing is...Widmore knows. And like Ben did, he has taken an interest in pregnancy on the island. He's lost the island again, I know, but it's only a matter of time before he manages to find it again, putting all of us in danger. I need to find him. I need to stop him Hurley." Zoe told him.
"How are you going to do that?" He asked her.
"I need to go home. I need to go to England." Zoe explained. "Can you take me there?"

The moment Sayid and Emma burst through the jungle foliage Keamy fired a warning shot which whizzed right by their heads. Emma screamed in terror and Sayid quickly pushed her safely behind him, shielding her with his body. In an instant, Sayid and Keamy were locked in a face-off, guns pointed at each other's chest.
Emma spotted Mel on the ground, blood still seeping from the bullet wound in her shoulder. "Mel!" she gasped. "What happened to you?"
Mel lowered her gun. "Ben happened," she groaned, and gripped her shoulder to ease the pain.
Emma whispered intimately into Sayid's ear, and he reluctantly lowered his own weapon. "We come in peace," he announced to Keamy. He tossed his gun on the ground and raised his hands. "We are only looking for Christian Shephard."
Mel looked at Emma in surprise. Keamy kept his gun aimed squarely at Sayid and said nothing. After Ben's surprising actions, he didn't trust anybody on this island to go anywhere near Mel.
"They're all right, Martin." Mel told him. She and Emma had never really been friends, but her instincts told her that she and Sayid sincerely meant her no harm. As if to defy Keamy, Emma walked over to Mel and crouched down, inspecting her shoulder.
"We should really get Jack to take care of you." Emma said in a concerned tone.
Mel ignored her and asked the question that had sprung to mind. "Why are you looking for Christian?"
"For Jack," Emma responded. "He doesn't yet know that his father tossed me to the other side of the island. I haven't had the heart to tell him." Emma gave Keamy a puzzled look, then returned her attention to Mel. "So, where is your husband?"
Mel sighed and struggled to stand up. "I have no idea."

Mel gave a thankful glance to Emma as she helped her stand, "I haven't seen Christian since I was taken by Richard and Ben. Martin, have you seen him?"
Keamy still had his gun trained on Sayid and was looking at Emma skeptically, "He was with me when we threw down with Ben. When I got shot he took off. I thought he was coming for you but I guess he never made it."
"Did Ben shoot him as well?" Mel asked.
"I don't know babe." Keamy answered.
Mel turned back to Emma, "I'm sorry I can't help you and honesty I'm not sure if I should."
"What?" Emma said, hurt.
"Christian is my husband and yes, I would like to know where he is considering he came out here to rescue me. But I don't wan to feed him to the lions."
Sayid moved closer to the group and Keamy watched him closely, "Mel, we are not going to hurt him."
"Aren't you? Sayid, I know how you feel about Emma, that you love her. Anyone who sees the two of you together can see it. Do you really expect me to believe that after what my husband did to Emma you don't want to retaliate?"
"Mel." Emma and Sayid said at the same time.
"Enough!" Keamy said, startling them all. "Mel is hurt, she needs to get to a doctor. We don't have time to hash this out right now."
Emma looked at Mel who had paled considerably, "You're right, we need to get her to Jack."
"Can I trust you?" Keamy asked Sayid.
Sayid nodded, "On my honor I will not harm either of you."
"Good." Keamy said and sowed his gun over his shoulder.
"I'm going to get you home babe, okay?" he said as he came close to Mel.
Mel looked up at him and felt a smile grace her lips and nodded. "Martin, I...."
Keamy waited for Mel to finish but she fell silent. Within seconds her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she went limp. He caught her before she fell to the ground and held her to his body protectivley. He looked at Emma and Sayid, "Let's go. We have to hurry."

Keamy easily cradled Mel in his strong arms. He took the lead as they trekked back towards the village, followed by Emma, and Sayid took the rear. Sayid and Emma held their guns ready in case they met anybody unexpected; Ben might be anywhere, hoping to finish Mel off for good.
Keamy's sense of urgency kept them going at a rapid pace. They finally burst past the security pylons and into the village courtyard. Oliver and Frank were in the center, tied securely to trees. A small group had gathered to watch and wonder what to do with Widmore's men. Jack stood in front of them, talking to someone very animatedly; it looked like they were arguing. It was difficult to tell who it was from where Martin, Emma and Sayid approached.
Keamy marched up to Jack but Emma pulled him back at the last moment. "Wait," she hissed to him.
Jack heard footsteps approaching behind him and turned to see who it was. His first reaction was relief to see Emma unharmed; he then registered how badly Mel needed medical attention and moved towards Keamy at lightning speed.
The person Jack had been talking to turned around very slowly to greet the newcomers, but his reaction was very different. It was Ben, and his shock over seeing Mel barely clinging to life was obvious to everyone. This time, however, he had an audience. Emma held her breath to see what he would do next.

Mel's eyes opened slowly when she heard the heated voices. She could tell they were upset about something but she couldn't make out what it was.
Suddenly Jack came into her view.
"What happened?" he asked as he looked her over. "Jesus, there is blood everywhere!"
"She was shot." Keamy answered, loud enough for everyone in the group to hear him.
"We need to get her to my house, right now. Where is Christian?"
"We didn't find him Jack. We ran into Mel and Keamy first." Emma explained.
Mel, oblivious to the conversation going on around her, lifted her head to see where she was. In that moment the crowd seemed to part and she saw Ben standing there with an unreadable expression on his face.
Mel eyes widened in fear and she clutched Keamy's shirt.
"Babe?" he said in question, then followed her gaze.
Seeing the man who had shot Mel and left her for dead made his blood boil. He wanted nothing more than to wrap his hands around his neck and choke the life out of him.
But Mel was whispering his name, "Martin."
Keamy bent his head down to her, "He knew Martin. Ben knew I was pregnant."
"And he shot you anyway?"
Mel nodded, the pained expression on her face showing just how much Ben's actions had hurt her.
"Martin, tell everyone I'm pregant."
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"It will be harder for him to kill me if everyone knows."
Keamy nodded and looked at Jack and raised his voice, "We have to hurry, Mel isn't the only one at risk."
"You don't mean." Emma said.
Keamy nodded, "She's pregnant."
There were audible gasps from the group in front of them. Keamy heard one remark in surprise that someone would shoot a pregnant woman, even one like Mel.
"Let's go." Jack said ushering Keamy towards his house.
Keamy looked down at Mel who had fallen unconscious again. He found Ben in the crowd and glared at him. Their business was in no way over.
