Hey, I think I saw you guys ahead of me in line, right in front, right? Nice to meet you officially! Where did you find out so early he was appearing there? First row? Very cool. I was told on the phone for some reason that the front section was reserved for VIPs. Maybe that was just to deter people from stampeding to the front, or else I misunderstood. Oh well, I doubt my mom and I would have been able to make it all the way down to the floor and back up again. He must have walked right in front of you onto the stage then! Gahhh ... Thanks for sharing your story and for the great pictures! I like your picture of the amphitheatre connecting you ("Me") to M.E. I would scan my program, but my scanner isn't working right, and there weren't any photos except the headshots you showed.

I think I saw you too... so nice to meet another Michael Emerson fan!
I only found out about M.E. doing the play two days before on the Spicedogs blog. It is completely unlike me to just drop everything and leave town as a spur of the moment decision, but I figured this was probably my one and only chance to see M.E. in person. I'm so glad I was able to make it!
When I asked one of the women who worked there where the best place to sit would be, she said that several of the middle rows were reserved for those with season passes, but the very first row was open for anyone. I have no idea why that was, but needless to say, we were sure to grab those seats!
It was so neat being that close to M.E. It was pretty funny... I heard several people laughing when he was coughing at the beginning, and he had this little smile on his face as if to say, "You fools, it's part of the act!"

I'm so glad I was able to make it! Oh, I guess I misinterpreted you when you said you found out about it last week. I thought maybe it had actually been announced somewhere besides the Erie County Pennysaver. Yeah, I wouldn't normally do something on such short notice either, and I even debated it because of my back condition (I've barely even left the house in the past two months!), but that's a measure of how serious the Michael obsession is! Like buying tickets before I even knew if I'd be able to find someone to go with. And not caring how much pain I'm in! (Ben sets a good example for that.) If someone had told me a week ago today that by the end of the week I'd have met him and gotten his autograph (even had his arm around me), I'd never have believed them! It was nice of your mom and sister to drop everything and come along--seven hours is a long way! Have they become Michael fans now too? (It's too bad my mom didn't get to see him up close. Plus she could've filled in all the blurs for me!) LOL ... I forgot about the coughing! It was too loud not to be part of the act. How cool that you could see his expression so clearly. (There was a guy in front of us who had binoculars, and I found myself wishing we had brought some! But it's hard to think of everything--like seat cushions--on short notice.)

Look at all those fangirls surrounding him! Is he picking up and setting down his attache or pack everyone time someone asks for a 'graph? He looks tired and weary, but still so civil and decent to his fans. I wonder if he is maybe getting fed up with the fame by now. At first I would imagine it would be a kick. But fame doesn't give you a night off. I wouldn't be surprised if soon he begins to put up barriers and to close access. I'd be sad, because I'd hate to think that there might a day be a time when he just turns away.
I've read that Angela Lansbury almost never refuses a fan an autograph or always try to manage a pleasant smile and a line of appreciation. I'd like to think Michael has the same class.

Bernadette Peters is another one who is always there for her fans. I think that once they are nice to begin with, they stay that way.

Oh cool, I'm so glad you got some video! Thanks for sharing it! Don't worry, he wasn't picking up and putting down his bag every time; as I recall, he set it down once, as soon as he got a good look at the crowd and switched himself into gracious fan-greeting mode. (The bag was on the floor behind him when he got to me.) I think he even came equipped with his own Sharpee because I had one ready for him to use when he got to me, but he already had one in his hand. When you see him bending down, it's because he's signing autographs on his knee! It didn't strike me that he was getting fed up with the fame just yet--rather that he's bracing himself for more of it to come! I think he just wasn't expecting such a fan turn-out at this artsy, barely advertised, out-of-the-way venue. He obviously has a lot of class and doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would brush off his fans no matter how famous he gets. However, based on his "ain't gonna happen" response to the questionnaire, I worry that he might take the Jonathan Frid route (remember him as Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows back in the '60s?) and go back to the stage and *relative* obscurity before he'd let himself become the next Tom Hanks or Brad Pitt and not be able to walk down the street or take the subway without being mobbed by fans.
LOL, speaking of Angela Lansbury, I could have had her autograph; she was right across the street from us when I was vainly waiting for Michael Sheen to come out of the theatre after Frost/Nixon. She had a huge crowd waiting for her, and she gave autographs to every one of them while we looked on. (Turned out we were at the wrong door ... but my mom got to shake her heartthrob Frank Langella's hand as he was ushered into his car.)

Oh, I do remember Jonathan Frid, and you know, him ducking back into the obscurity of the theater would totally fit. I mean, how else was he was supposed to surprise his victims on dark streets and empty houses? LOL! Just kidding! I could see that MRE doing that too (going back to the theater, not surprising victims) if it got to be too much. He strikes me as someone who just loves his craft and wants to do that and the fame is nice if it doesn't overshadow the work.
I can totally respect MRE if he did that, but my guess is he would do it because he wants to do that kind of work, and not so much to avoid his fans. I can certainly see him trying to put some distance between his "Lost" character and his career, once "Lost" is over. But he's smart enough to see that for now, this is the brass ring, and you're nuts not to grab it when it comes around, because not everybody gets the chance.

You should get a look at the pic of him at the Post-Gazette site. It's the Michael portion of the TV guide cover. Click on the "view all images" link to get a bigger view.
