I was reading Kat Candler’s blog, the director of Jumping off Bridges, and found quite a few references to her working with Michael before, during, and after the shoot. www.storieproductions.com/katsblog.htmlFor your reading ease, here's the first half of all the references to him in order (hey, it was fun to do – and I AM an expert skimmer, if I do say so myself). Line breaks indicate passage of time. I bolded the most interesting parts. PART 1 “I'm beaming. Simply beaming. One of the actors that I wanted for JUMPING wants to do the film. His agent emailed me today saying they're ready to talk about contracts and terms. Oh my god. I'm beside myself with joy. His people are talking to my people. Literally. It's almost a done deal. Donise spoke with Michael Emerson's agent today. She said he's one of the nicest agents she's ever talked to. They're working out the details of the contract. This feels meant to be. I'm so excited. He's going to be brilliant. We lived in Jacksonville at the same time and I took an acting workshop from him when I was like 15 or something like that. I remember how amazing he was. I admired him so much. From there, Stacy and I met up with Michael Emerson. He's a sweet, sweet man. Very much what I remember him to be when I was in high school. He showed up all dapper in a three piece suit. I loved it! We exchanged stories, talked about old times, gave our outlooks on life ... He seems really excited about the film. It reaffirmed my decision. We've also been in conversation all day long with Michael's agent and manager. Michael's actually on a plane as I write this. He should touch down in an hour. It's been pure insanity. After dinner tonight, Michael and I were heading back to my car when a woman stopped us. She recognized him from The Practice and kept telling him how creepy and scary he was. I stood there feeling awkward and uncomfortable. There's something about fame and celebrity that in the past year or so has made me feel uneasy and weird. I don't know what it is really. My actors are amazing. …Watching Anne and Michael on the couch cuddled up watching television, Rhett and Bryan wrestling in the yard… They've all come to life so gracefully. Last night I had a short, but fantastic rehearsal. It was just Michael and Anne doing a scene after they come home from church. The two of them fit beautifully. It was a perfect scene. We wrapped Anne Nabors today. This woman is phenomenal. …Her and Michael had some wonderful scenes together today. My favorite perfect scene that I was so excited about in rehearsals made me scream with joy after I yelled, "cut". I was so blown away. I cried pretty hard yesterday. Partly from Bryan and Michael's performances in the scene when they finally have it out, partly because at that moment, I felt the most connection to this film and this story and everyone involved and partly because I was tired. Tomorrow's Michael's last day. I'm really going to miss him. It was Michael's last day. I'll miss him. I really loved working with him. And he gave me a fantastic performance." From a different blog, by an actress working on the same movie: “Today was my first rehearsal for the film. … Michael Emerson, who has been brought in from NY is absolutely phenomenal. Once I discovered who he was, I was really intimidated to work with him. Within seconds into our scene though that changed and instead of feeling scared I felt inspired. I'll have to tell him sometime that he gave me a little gift without even knowing it. Inspiration.Grabbed Michael E. (from the film) and had lunch at Chuy's. Then we roamed around Laguna Gloria. It was wonderful hearing about what he's done. Not pretentious just very nice. Hope I didn't bore him to tears. But It was great to work with this group. I am so inspired by working with Michael Emerson…. Wonderful in that again, I got to be in a scene with Michael Emerson and Michael Conway. Then cast and crew met at the Draft House for social hour. I know I've said this before, but everyone is so nice that is a part of this film. I can see a strong bond within this group. There was also some sadness to the day. Today was the last scene I had with Michael E. I hope I get the opportunity to act with someone of his talent again. ( Look for him in the next Zorro movie. )”leslielangee.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_leslielangee_archive.html

Oh my gawd!!
I got butterflies in my stomach reading that!!
People often describe him as being 'inspiring' so I wonder, what is it about him that makes them say this?
Maybe it's his talent, or his enthusiasm, or his commitment to excellence, or maybe he's a genius who glows with an infectious light.
I guess he's one of those people that makes the world a better place just by being who he is.
Thanks for sharing this, henryrocks!

I am moved, well...disturbed might be a better word... on a few levels. I am, of course, jealous; jealous that these nice people were fortunate enough to have been touched by Michael's charm and charisma, and jealous of his charm and charisma! I want to be like that, to inspire people and have them be excited about working with me. I want to be good enough at something and generous of spirit so that someone, someday, will write like that about me in their blog. Isn't it human nature to want to make an impression in this way? I hope so. So, I guess Michael has shown us what may be possible if we persevere and strive for excellence. I guess the good news is that, from a distance, Michael has inpsired me. By hearing these wonderful stories about how people have aspired to achieve things they may not have pursued if it were not for his influence, he has given me incentive to achieve as well. Now what I end up achieving is a mystery, for now.

Jumping Off Bridges blog, PART 2 “Lorie, Stacy and I will head to New York in mid-September. … We'll get to visit with Michael Emerson. Nevie cut together Bryan and Michael at the end of the film in a scene of complete emotional collapse. It reaffirmed everything for me. Watching the two of them work off each other flawlessly in a scene of utter poignancy.www.storieproductions.com/2005/08/zak-mrs-nelson-mr-nelson-and-me.html – Sunday night Stacy, Lorie, Deena, Michael, Jim, Nevie and I watched the very, very close to picture lock version of JUMPING. … My head rested on Michael's couch and I grinned and grinned. Great news from the actor front ... 1) Michael Emerson is currently in Hawaii working on the TV show "Lost". So far his experience involves "hanging from a tree in a man-trap of fishnet and vines and then being shot through the shoulder with a cross-bow." Poor Michael. He continues to be cast in films and television that involve getting shot at, beaten with the back of a toilet and thrown against walls. And now a cross bow ... I'm happy to report that the only pain we caused while he worked on "jumping" was Texas heat. I just caught the tail end of the "red hot" television show, Lost. The preview for next week's episode shows Michael hanging from that net in a tree and shot through the shoulder with a crossbow. He's been in Hawaii since the beginning of January shooting and isn't due back until the end of March. I'm crossing my fingers that his character survives until next season. We're still waiting to find out if the Lost producers will let him come out for SXSW. I really hope so. It'd be so nice to see him. It looks like Michael's coming for the screening. Michael's episode airs on LOST tonight. Stacy, Tracy and I are headed over to Nevie's in a few minutes to do some major stickering of postcards. We'll also be dining on take out Enoteca. Their rigatoni and meatballs is to die for. I missed last week's episode of LOST where Michael sort of alludes to not having told the truth ... go figure. Of course he's an "Other", people! He always plays bad, creepy, scary, psycho guys. If I'm wrong about this ... I won't be. We got a really warm and wonderful response to the film. Michael was there to field questions about the movie and about LOST. And over the course of the weekend, there were many questions about LOST. When we went to do press Friday morning, he was bombarded with people wanting photographs and autographs. It was sweet, really. He's so good about that sort of thing. Very patient and kind to everyone. He's just like that. But I really had no idea how fanatical people are about that show. … And one last thing ... I KNEW Michael Emerson was the head of the Others!” Aaand, while I’m at it, a few more personal references I’ve scooped up : popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2006/05/lost_zekes_been.html - Apparently 8th Avenue is one he walks down often. I like this quote: “I saw Henry Gale in the audience of a show on Broadway on April 19. Every time he laughed, I shuddered.” lost-and-gone-forever.blogspot.com/2006/05/three-minutes-in-brief.html - “Yesterday I met Michael Emerson, AKA Henry (Fake Henry, Fenry) in a store in St. Augustine, Florida. He was gracious and nice and friendly to the blubbering crazed fan that I morphed into upon meeting him. I thought you would like to know that he told me "there's a great site about Lost that check out, "lost and gone forever". (not his exact words, but close). It is indeed a great blog. I thought it was funny that he told me "don't forget to watch this Wednesday night". Just as if I could possibly miss it!I was on cloud nine the rest of the day after meeting him, it was so cool to meet an actor from my favorite show.” [... If that just put HER on cloud nine, I'm almost afraid to think what a similar encounter would do to us!] www.wists.com/everyone/lost/36c4699c63a7c909b31ba5512ea58107 - “Just saw Michael Emerson (aka "Henry Gale) on ABC's Lost hustling down 53rd towards 9th Ave. Just as creepy in real life.” www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1197051-2-2_3||1045714|1_,00.html - Q: One of the season's most memorable moments was Locke trapped under the wall and seeing that mysterious Dharma map in the black light. What was it like being pinned under there? Terry O’Quinn: That was a bad week. I had a cold. Everybody got sick. When somebody gets sick, everybody gets sick on a film set. I had a cold, didn't have much of a voice. But it's great working with Michael Emerson [Henry Gale]. That episode turned out better than I thought. When I read the script I thought, ''This is going to be miserable — or uninteresting. Me, lying under a door.'' But these guys always surprise me.www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=88655&page=205 - JG: What surprised you most about the season?
Carlton Cuse: How awesome Michael Emerson was. [Aw yeah, give it up!] I think he was going to come on for a couple of episodes--originally, storywise, we thought he might be in two--and he ended up being in eight or nine because he was so amazing.
- - - - That last quote I found interesting, because to me it always sounded like it wasn't JUST Michael, it was other things - like the producers/writers eventually getting their teeth into the character, them hearing a great viewer reaction, etc. That may be true - but this seems to say that in the end, the one person responsible for Henry's becoming a regular in S3 is the guy playing him. That's awesome. The moral being, I guess, even if you get a tiny bit part in a much bigger project (or the equivalent thereof), play. your. heart out. Amidala64, I’m glad you were so touched by that post! I hadn't thought of it that way (being just an information-hungry fan, ha), but that's an insightful take. True, he did say in that interview you posted that it took him decades to get to that point, but still. I'm sure you're capable of doing remarkable things where you are

Wow, henryrocks. You really found some great stuff!!
And he's sweet and patient with fans! I hope that lasts. TV notoriety can be a burden, I bet.
I love hearing that people think he's so wonderful. The blubbering, starstruck LOST fan floating on cloud nine was cute. Yeah, if it were one of us, we'd be floating on a whole storm system that would show up on Doppler radar!!
Someday, maybe I'll be able to meet him and live to tell the tale....lol.
Right now, I'm happy just to be touched by his fire from a safe distance.

Heh, I haven't squeezed Google completely dry, looks like. 5/13/2006 Hey we met Henry Gale the scary guy from the hatch on LOST this week in your hood this week! We had dinner at Hale Vietnam and he was at the table by the round window. He was nice in real life tho' not scary...I once told Ryan if we ever saw him in real life I'd scream and run the other way but he wasn't scary in real life after alll.....profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=21781285Jul 6, 2006 I live in NYC and about a week ago was walking down St. Mark's in the East Village when who did I see walking out of an apartment building but Henry Gale himself! He was wearing jeans, a T-shirt, and a leather jacket, just a normal guy. I literally almost ran screaming down the street. We locked eyes and he knew I recognized him.Scariest. ****. Ever. I will never be able to think of him as anything other than Henry Gale (or whatever his actual name is). forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=3141867&pid=5607487&st=0entry5607487May 30th, 2006 I came home tonight feeling great. [Examples of this] ...and I had a real life Henry Gale sighting. From Lost. The creepiest **** ever. Those eyes are even beadier in real life. ...Instead I will brush my teeth, take out my contacts, go to sleep, and try not to have nightmares about Henry Gale. Because that is what adults do. lilitinstereo.com/?p=18NBA Finals Blog, Mavericks vs. Heat, Game 2 (June 14, 2006) My favorite celebrity run-in so far — the guy that plays Henry Gale on Lost. I realized he was at the game as I came off the court after a flag run — he was sitting right by the entrance we use to the court. As I ran by, I remember thinking to myself, “Whoa! That’s Henry Gale from Lost!” I nearly stopped in my tracks to ask him, “WHO ARE YOU REALLY ON THE SHOW? WHO IS ‘HENRY GALE’?” I was going to ask him if I bumped into him in the tunnels, but I didn’t. He’s not as creepy in person as he is on the show, but you could see the creepiness in him begging to get out. It was pretty awesome.www.lunaradventures.net/2006/06/14/nba-finals-blog-mavericks-vs-heat-game-2/June 20, 2006 So, last night, much to my delight and amazement, I recognized a celebrity! This guy attended my roommate's show: [Michael's b&w imdb photo]. ...I was secretly hoping, beyond all reason, that the rest of the cast would show up, but obviously, they didn't. www.xanga.com/brookly/499143274/star-struck.html... I AM good at this! ;D And, for a good laugh, you must visit this page: unraveling.typepad.com/breaksville/2006/06/i_have_been_avo.html#comments*snorts* You know, she does have a point. What? *grin* And here I am thinking the man has a bad sense of style, after watching that Q&A in Jacksonville. Awww, you weren't diggin' the vest over a t-shirt with khakis look? Seeing him in that outfit made me think he would smell nice, like clean laundry. It was kinda funky, like mid-west meets Manhattan. But imagining him in a t-shirt, jeans and leather jacket is so downtown bad-boy, like his would be the wallet that says 'bad m*****f*****' on it!

Awww, you weren't diggin' the vest over a t-shirt with khakis look? Just the plaid vest, Amidala, just the vest If you look at it as 'funky,' it does work - I just think he could do far, far better. Ideally? Maybe a dark button-up shirt, or - yeah, leather works OK, I'm shutting up now.

How great is this? A stunt woman who works with Michael in just one scene has to blog about how great an actor he is, how he makes her job easier: heatherpoohs.blogspot.com/2006/05/did-you-see-me-on-show-last-night.htmlA neat transcript of a conversation between Michael and Kristin from E!Online - they'd run into each other at 2 a.m. that morning: Click hereAnd Kevin Spacey had this to say about Michael in his "Iceman Cometh" diary: "Robert Sean Leonard and Michael Emerson are finely tuned, highly intelligent and experienced stage actors. Others have to fight the curse of their naturalistic experience in movies and TV." www.drivingmrspacey.com/IcemanDiary.htm
